WTH? If anything, its good for the neck, as gravity pulling down on the body would help keep the neck straight. I've had a Fender Starcaster with no strings hanging on a rack for the last year and a half (near a window, getting plenty of direct sunlight, no less) and the neck is still very straight

Well, you have to tap the body through the finish, then hang the bucket on the tap.

A wise old wino at the bus station told me that if you hang a bass by its neck, all the mojo runs out the hole drilled for the bottom strap mount.

some of the "anecdotal poop" may be from witnessing the results of hanging instruments way up high in music stores; the air is noticeably drier and warmer up there, which can make setups go funny.

I was told from pretty much day one (31 yrs ago,this x-mas,man I'm gettin' old!),and it's stuck with me:

I was told NOT to use the stands that cradles the body.Like this:

And was advised to use a stand like this:

I was also told that if a stand is used like the first one I listed (FretRest/ProLine),Put the bass in the stand with the strings facing AWAY from you (more or less,put it in backwards).

How much of this is true,I don't know.It's not like Dan Erliwine told me,or anything.Come to think of it,I think it was an old wino,with a bucket of maple syrup,that told me.

I've been hanging my instruments, both solid and acoustic, on the wall for years and I've never had a problem. If it caused damage would retailers display their wares in this fashion?

be sure not to pay attention to anything else that person has ever told you, including "hey, look out for that bus!"

seriously, the first stand indeed sucks, and the second rocks, but just because of the chances of the instrument falling out onto the floor, which matters way more than any hanging pressure on the neck.

Just to chime in, my friends dad has a '74 Les Paul (A guitar, not a bass, but the issues would be the same) that he used to hang, and it did eventually wear out the finish around the headstock where it hung from.

Now, its not like he needed to set up the instrument every time he took it down, but saying it has *no* effect at all isn't true, in my books. This guy will never hang his guitars again, because of the damage to the finish. (But I guess if you dont care about that, there's no real harm)

that's an entirely different issue. nitro lacquer instruments react with the surgical rubber on many stands, softening and getting quickly worn through.

the answer there is to use stands with the black "foam" rather than the rubber, or better yet, use cotton cloth at the contact points. (that's what we do at the music store on all the gibsons.)

this has nothing to do with hanging the instrument by the neck.

If hanging it by it's neck throws it out of setup I would be looking for a new bass.

That would be one sorry bass that could be thrown out of adjustment by suspending it by its neck (just under the peghead, I would presume).
