Hanging Bass By Neck - Good or Bad?

I recently read some guitar tech saying that he doesn't like hanging guitars by the neck since those guitars need setups more often, can anyone chime in on this? I use a Hercules stand only when I'm playing at church, but I haven't seen a need for a re-setup because of it.

hmm never heard about that? i wouldnt see why it would hurt though.

Most music stores hang 'em by the neck, I've never heard of people having setup problems because of them. 'Course, it may be different for a working instrument, once you've bought it and got it set up, it will take over your favorite chair, just like a cat, until you buy it a proper stand. Then it will sit on the stand and annoy your parrot.

I know a reputable guitar repairer who has guitars in his workshop almost 100 years old, and he hangs every guitar in there by it's neck. So I wouldn't worry.

If hanging it by it's neck throws it out of setup I would be looking for a new bass.

The only downside I can think of is the pressure over time it will put on the finish where it touches the headstock. A little while might be alright but 20 years hanging could be a different story. That said, I've never actually heard of anyone having trouble hanging a bass in real life.

I've never had a problem handing by the neck but I don't like to do it if I have a choice, just doesn't seem right especially since the strap attaches to the body but again, I've never noticed a problem, I just don't preffer doing it

Wanted to add that you should rotate your stock. If you own several basses and are not a collector - then each week they should get some playing time.

I keep 3 on floor stands and rotate the few I have hanging on the wall to the stands and play them - putting the others on the wall.

Blasphemy! I am the tooth fairy! BOT, I've had all of my basses hanging and never had a problem. Horsehockey.

The more I think about it, the less likely it seems because if anything, hanging a bass will relieve some of the tension on the neck from the strings. The only thing to worry about now is neck elongation because my 34" seem like 35" these days, jk.

i play a neck through, so i don´t worry about that nonsense

but seriously...i would´t keep my bass on a hanger at home, it´s safer in its case and collects less dust.

Been discussed here a number of times. Hanging guitars/basses by the neck does no harm. Period.
