hanging bass on wall hook

Is there anything about hanging a bass on wall hanging hardware where it hangs from the head that would damage a bass or cause it to be out of tune,etc.? In the manual that came with my bass, it said that hanging it from the head could maybe bend the truss rod or intonation or something that would affect the sound. Im not even sure if this is what the manual is referring to, but I see basses of all kinds hanging in guitar center and you would think if it was harmful or even if it would cause the need for adjustments and make it sound bad, they wouldn't do that. I've used one of these hooks before on another bass, and it didn't seem to cause problems. So i dont know if thats just in the manual because maybe they use it to void the warranty, or they are just extra careful or what. Has anyone heard of this? If it matters, the bass is a brand new Rickenbacker.

My roommate had this hook and she installed it and hung the bass on it, and she was all proud about it, and I was just wondering if thats not a good idea.

Nope. Not gonna hurt it hanging on a wall, unless the wall mount wasn’t installed correctly, and it pulled off the wall. Drive the screws into a wooden stud, or use appropriate toggle bolts and you’re good to go.

The specific part of the manual that you’re referring to is in the neck adjustment section. If I am understanding the intention of what is written, I think it it is saying not to hold by the neck or headstock while making truss rod adjustments. I could be wrong.

A bass weighs 10 pounds, give or take. Your strings put 150 pounds (give or take) of force on the neck. I keep basses on hanging stands (Hercules) both at home and at gigs. No problems.

Wall hangers are completely safe.

There's generally no worries about hanging from a hook. As long as everything is good and secure there won't be a damage. There are a couple of things to note and watch out for.
-Best to mount directly into a stud. Or if hanging multiple instruments and want different spacing than the studs, mount a board into the studs then the hooks into that board.
-Make sure the hook itself is good quality can support the weight. Some of the cheaper instrument wall hangers are complete junk and will break. I use U shaped utility/tool hooks from the hardware store; cheap and very sturdy.
-Check the coating on the hooks and make sure it won't react with the finish on the neck. Modern instrument usually have no issue with this. Nitro finishes on vintage instruments may react with some rubbers.

They hang in music shops for years but according to some tb members once you take it out the front doors of guitar center they can't be hung up anymore

Or when you, or someone else, or the dog, knocks it over while your instrument is on it....

I keep a Hercules locking stand handy while I'm practicing or recording, so I can quickly put an instrument down safely. The rest of the time they all hang on the wall or live in cases.

I think this the only thing you’ve ever written that made me go “Hmmm”…..

You may have seen me write me before that I hate the idea of hanging a bass by its neck on a wall hanger. I know it’s widely done, I know nearly all music store use wall hangers to display basses, I don’t care, I don’t like it. Yes, I’ve bought basses that I’ve taken down off the wall hangers and they were just fine. Still don’t like it.

So I gotta ask…..

How is storing basses on wall hangers better for the bass than using the floor guitar stands?

The only bad experience I had with a floor stand was many years ago when a drunk woman jumped on our stage, stumbled, and knocked over my Alembic bass, which caused the headstock to snap off. The only dumb thing about that incident was having a gorgeous Alembic bass on that bar gig in the first place….

... when installed properly. If it's in a stud, its good. I would not and do not trust "drywall anchors" (well, maybe for a picture frame, but not my bass).
