Hanging your basses

Hey guys not sure this is the right forum or not but I bought some string swing slat wall hangers I want to hang two rows of basses and guitars in my music room. I have eight foot ceilings so I need to get them spaced out as best as possible. I planned to hang the basses on the top and the guitars on the bottom. Here is my question for the guys who have done something like this, how much room do I need to leave between the hangers and the ceiling so I can hang the guitars without bumping the headstocks off the ceiling? It's just me doing this so trying to hold the basses hangers to find a measurement would be very hard, that's why I asked.

I can help you out because I have done exactly what you are talking about.

The guitars have to be on the top row and basses on bottom. The short guitar necks will keep the body up and away from the bass body on the bottom, if you have them the other way the bass body will hit the guitar body.

The top row is mounted 10" from the ceiling which is plenty of room to put in the hangers without hitting the head stock. The bottom row is 30" from the ceiling.

The hangers on each row is spaced 20" apart, with each hanger being in the center of the row above or below it. So every 10 inches there is a hanger.

Probably the best way is to determine what guitsrs will be hung where. Then hang them all by eye after finding studs. Stsrt at one end and then hang them one by one leaving the desired space for each. Thats just how id do it

^ It all depends, really. Those Hercules clamps are pretty much bulletproof (when screwed to a wall stud).

I've been hanging instruments for years, I have never had one fall. Most of those in the picture are also not anchored in the stud, I use large sheet rock anchors, they will nearly hold me up, the basses are just fine.

Thanks your right about the guitars being on top thanks for the picture. I don't have the single units I have the 8 ft long aluminum slats that the individual hangers slide into. So I can slide them from side to side as I need to add more guitars I can also get ones that turn the guitars to sit at angles to save more space. I got this

did it years ago but kind of ended when the wife redecorated a long time ago. Actually had one fall, totally my fault, but since then not sure i would do it even if i could.

You can hang two rows of basses in a room with a standard ceiling but you have to calculate the distance between instruments allowing room for the widest bass you own on the top row, and on the bottom row, for that wide bass body plus the tuners to stick out the sides of a 2x2 headstock (that adds about 2" per side, or 4" total for tuners). Take a look at the basses on the bottom row and you'll see what I mean.

On the top row, you need to add room to allow you to lift the bass off the hangar and not hit the ceiling.

Mine are around 8-10" from the ceiling,
using 6" hangers, that can swivel.
All are mounted into a wood backing, except one I had to put into brick.

Well got my slatwall and hangers from string swing and got my basses and my sons guitars up on the wall.

Also picked up an iMac and a apogee duet with breakout box....my dreams of a music room/recording area is getting there
