This bass riff during the guitar solo starting at 5:30 is among the most awesome bass sounds I remember growing up and one of the main reasons I play bass. One of Rush's heaviest (and nerdiest, bless them!) songs ever.

Happy Birthday Gary Weinrib! Anywhoo...the reason he switched from the Wal (my fav tone of his) to the Jazz is that Counterparts was a harder rock album and he didnt feel it had the "beastly bottom end" the Jazz had. He used producer Peter Collins' Wal while recording Power Windows and he fell in love with the tone. He used it under Roll the Bone. Other than R40, he has only ever used Fender (P that later became the teardrop and of course his J's), Ric's (a few different varieties), Steiny, and Wal live that I know of. Said it here on TB multiple times but, Im not a fan of his live tone anymore. Artificial sansamp buzzsaw distortion and scooped clangy tone. YMMV

His live tone has improved since the Snakes and Arrows. Less Sansamp distortion and tone.

And the reverbed bass riff in the intro to this one, maybe the heaviest song Rush ever did. As a bonus, it ends with perhaps the greatest ever Geddy scream. This stuff was like oxygen to a 15-year-old sci fi metalhead fan like me, I must've wore out this record, I listened to it so much.

I think he will make another solo album. I like My favorite headache. A lot of Rush fans like to bash it but I think it was good overall.

Grace to Grace is one of my all time favorite songs!!!!! As it rides out the ending you can hear how powerful his singing has really become over the years. I think ALOT of his stellar vocal writing gets forgotten about so let's not forget...he's as good on the pipes as he is on da bass man!!!!!!!!

When I bought my $140 Fender clone bass a few years ago and began learning bass, little did I know I'd not only learn Geddy's entire early Rush catalog (up to Signals), but also buy and learn synths and pedals so I could play their songs 'right'. If that didn't make me respect Geddy enough, learning to sing those songs made me realize what an insanely awesome musician he really is. Happy Birthday to still my all time favorite bass player!

the Wal tone he recorded for Presto, so warm, boomy, and luxurious sounding.A good set of headphones bring this tome out. I believe it was a different Wal from Power Windows and Hold Your Fire.

The exit stage left "angry piano" tone from the Ric. The Trees and from the video version of ESL, Limelight.

The Fender Jazz tone for Counterparts. If I remember right, not only did he go back to the Jazz, he went to Ampeg amps as well.
