Happy Kwanzaa, everybody.

it always seemed to me like a pretty racist holiday...

That has to be one of the more silly posts I have ever read at TB. Where during Kwanzaa do the celebrators go around saying they hate another group or are superior to another group? If you say the holiday is racist because it was designed for a particular group, then all holidays are racist because no holiday, even New Years Day, is universal.

I am really getting tired of people who, in a knee jerk fashion, call anything racist if it done by Black people. That entire reasoning is just stupid.:rollno:

I know Black state worker in South Carolina, where I grew up, take Confederate Day off too. That said, I have known of whites who come in on MLK Day, hey if you don't want to acknowledge it, that your right too.:smug: That said, anyone who won't take a holiday out of spite is a doofus.:D

As I've mentioned before, my black friends and I bust each others balls at every possible turn. Discussions of Confederate Day/MLK day often get heated but we always end up laughing........or cursing ......but never any long lasting hard feelings :D They automatically ASSUME that because I'm white and a NASCAR fan, I support Confederate Day and that flag. I have to remind them that I'm from New York and they owe my ancestors a debt of gratitude for fighting for their freedom :p OH!!!!!! That gets it going :help:

The reason for establishing December 25 as Christmas is somewhat obscure, but it is usually held that the day was chosen to corresspond to pagen festivals that took place around the time of the "winter solstice", when the days begin to lengthen, to celebrate the "rebirth of the sun", not the son of God.

This is a fact.

You are right that the reason is somewhat obscure. It was most likely chosen to correspond primarily with the winter solstice as that was a significant day in the year already due to various Roman festivals. The festivals themselves took place at slightly different times each year (like Easter does for us), while the winter Solstice was a set date (25th December). To say it was chosen to correspond specifically with the festivals is slightly inaccurate.

Please point out your references in the actual Holiday that make this so. :rollno:

Actually, I had just better stay out of this now because I can see this thread will sooner or later have a bunch of questionable comments that will only get people ticked off, which is why I am getting away from posting or participating in anything on TB other than Bass talk.

For the record, I do believe this kind of response from the poster is a knee jerk response felt by many.

Whatever...........:eyebrow:

I guess white guys can say whatever they want....thanks for sharing.

As can anyone else - I'm just having fun.

In all seriousness, I think Kwanzaa is just as valid a holiday as any other - most holidays had to be invented by somebody. I still have yet to have met anybody who actually celebrates Kwanzaa, so I figure I might as well give it a shot.
