The first bass body that I ever built was semi hollow with a maple frame, top & back. I took a Gibson EB0 pickup and placed it into a route that I had made in the frame, then I glued the top over it. I did drill holes for the polepieces in the top.
Yes, it wasn't all that loud. Yes, it wasn't the brightest idea.
Apparently someone liked it; it was stolen a couple of years later.
I'm guessing someone else had a "lightbulb" moment.
It does look pretty cool in a Mothman sort of way...
