Hard chopping tremolo

@Crowd crusher curious to know which way you went on this. I'm looking at exactly this issue for my synth bass setup. I have a boss pn2 which does the hard chop well but I'm thinking tap tempo would make for more flexibility playing live. Any updates?
Catalinbread Semaphore hard chop, tap tempo, great tone and headroom (9-18V), but out of production

I picked up one of these last week and I like it a lot, cheap too.

Hey now. @JimboP I actually bought a Cusack tap a whirl v2. And it worked awesome for my synth bass setup....until I scored a Moog Rogue lol. The lfo and auto trigger give me the hardest chop I've heard. So most of my synth bass is now coming from there. , but the Cusack was awesome. I would have bought the Moog mf102 but they were a little out of my range at the time. And I had a hard time finding one with the manual...thanks for the inquiry. This thread was immensely helpful.

I started off thinking all I needed was a hard square wave chop, tap tempo, maybe a nice ramped or sine wave pulse... and then I saw the Lightfoot Labs Goatkeeper drool Is there anything else that comes close to this combination of tremolo options and programmable gating functionality without having to sell a kidney?

The Source Audio Vertigo has quite a few options and preset spaces if you use the Neuro app. And, it's easy and cheap to add a tap tempo to it.

I fell absolutely in love with my Vertigo again last night. It was probably the pedal I used the most throughout my 4 hour gig.

The Moog MF-Boost and an EHX 8-Step program would do a good portion of what you seek, or use a Korg SQ-1 and get even closer.

Or

The EHX Super Pulsar does lots of it, and if you had a CV or MIDI source you could probably get really close to having all the Goatkeeper features, plus a whole lot more.

I've wanted to try that 8step/mf boost combo for a while but I don't think current board space will accommodate

It's not a trem, but the EQD Depths can seriously chop! Dime the intensity and throb, minimize the voice and set rate to taste. It's an incredible box for bass. Many, many great sounds.

Also have an Idiotbox Mad Doc Stutter on the way to compare. Hope it's as good as advertised!

Now my head hurts...I'm wandering off into gated step sequencer territory.

Thanks guys for the comments. These are some cool flexible tremolo options but can they extend to do gated step-sequencer patterns with the precision of the Goatkeeper?

@Alien8 The Super Pulsar comes close but it doesn't look like you can change the length of the individual segments in a pattern eg. join two or more together to form longer sustained notes in the pattern. I looked at demos of the 8-step but they all seemed to use it for pitch/note changes rather than gated volume on/off. Can you use it as a simple volume gate in a pedal chain? I'm using octave down, fuzz, modulation, MF-101... no MIDI

@bassmonkeee So you can build and save your own tremolo algorithms in the SAV via the app, but can you program step sequencing in there somewhere?

I have a Voodoo Labs Tremolo that is a good unit, it has a good range of adjustment and can go from subtle to choppy.

I have been looking at demos of the Vertigo and like what I hear.

?

With the MF-101, you can set the filter frequency all the way to 0, and use the Mix as a volume. You could use the 8-step to send CV to the Mix CV to modulate it. You would get 4 steps essentially. Using the play and stop buttons you could pause on a step to change the length, or change he the tempo. It would all be really manual, but possible.

It might work well, and you could use the drive to make up some lost volume. I haven't tried this...

I've got a Boss MD-500 coming (just got a message that it has arrived in the shop).
I'm thinking of using my SA BEF in the loop of the MD-500, then I can use the tremolo before the filter as a trigger and also after if I want to.
I'm really looking forward to try the trem in the MD500.
