I play a lot of hard rock, and love bass tone that cuts through the mix and has a touch of distortion. However, there are a few tones that I have no idea how to even begin to try to reproduce. I love the tone of the bass guitar in the song 'That Girl' by A Girl A Gun A Ghost ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]). Could you point me in the right direction as far as what recording setup would be best to try and get this tone? I have a Fender Active Jazz bass and a Line 6 Bass POD XT.

No he did not. I'm just looking for help with getting that tone. I figure a studio/recording bassist has to be pretty knowledgeable on that issue

Yeah, it's not my specialty. But maybe you need to blend 3 sources: clean DI, very dirty "scoopy" amp, anything from GK to Ampeg, really. Then also an exploding guitar amp with a tube screamer on the front end. That might be a great recipe. Blend the three until satisfaction arrives. Jazz bass is a great start, I'd say.
A really simple method I use is the Boss ODB-3 pedal before my Bass pod Xt. The ODB-3 has a blend knob, so you can add 25% blend of dirt, and then put the gain around 10 o'clock. You would have to play around but the blend knob is sent from heaven, and the two band EQ is quite nice too!
