Hard rock: SVT610HLF vs SVT810e

I have a fair amount of experience with these, but if your friend has a 410hlf, that might not tell you how the 610hlf will sound, completely...all of which is a moot point to me now because I find the 810e to be vastly superior to the hlf cabs. I'd be happy enough if an 810e showed up on a backline electric gig, but I just cannot stand those hlf's...mud factories :D

SWR and Mesa both make much better 610's. They don't have to sound "modern" if you don't want them to, just that you can hear more detail in the mids, they aren't "cloudy" or "covered up" like the 610HLF. Both of those run louder than the Ampeg as well.

This - PH610 or Goliath Sr both smoke either of those Ampeg cabs...

Searching for info on these cabs I have seen your name frequently come up George. Generally, I have always loved and preferred Mesa gear. Finding used Mesa gear near me is very difficult though.

Yeah, I gigged in very loud, 2 guitar rock/metal bands for years - I've owned atleast (3) SVT-810e cabs, atleast (3) SVT-410HLFs, an SVT-610HLF, Mesa's PH610, PH810, and PH215, besides spending alot of band rehearsal time playing thru Mesa's PH1000 and SWR's Goliath Sr... I still have the PH810, PH215, and a Road Ready 115 - those 3 cabs meet any of my needs quite well...

You *could* say I've got a bit of experience on the subject:

IMO, for volume, low end, and clarity, the PH610 and Goliath Sr are the best choices mentioned so far, given your stated goals... Other excellent choices to consider would be the PH412, and G-K's 412 Neo, with the Goliath Sr and the G-K being the most likely to turn up as a deal on the used market... Hit any of those cabs with 400-500 watts, and they should be able to handle any reasonable gig reliably, and work well for you...

Funny, you read my mind about the 412s. I would love a ph610 or 412 cab but I just don't have the loot. I want caviar on a fish stick budget :P

So what's your preference for touring cabs now?

The 610. So much better. More articulate and deeper. When I think modern hard rock I think some punchy fatness and growl. That cab does it better than the 810

I can't hear that at all. I've owned/gigged both cabs hard and the 610 (which i thought would be a good idea due to a smaller size) sounds completely different from the 810. Punch and cut with the 810, mud and uncontrollable low end from the 610. **to my ears**

You really have to be about 15 feet away from the 610 to hear what is going on. I had that problem in rehearsal, being way to close to the cab and only getting mud. Once i figured out that you really need to step back some distance to hear it, you can adjust your EQ properly from there.

If I had to do it again, i would've stuck with the 810. YMMV however!

I seriously think I would just keep it in my garage, lol

Now to be fair, I am playing more on the metal side. Drop A, and even flirting with the idea of F# 0. Would the 810 still be good for this?

Ya. Any notes that low are going to be all harmonics and very little fundamental from any speaker, no matter what their maker claims or what you think you're hearing.

The svt810 will do it. The Mesa or SWR 610's will do it with clarity and a bit more sense of depth, though a still recognizable sense of tone and pitch, without the slop of the HLF.

People got this thing where they worry about "I got a low B, I need 30hz"....all the while not realizing that every low B they've ever heard through a big live concert subwoofer system that shook their bones was highpassed at 40hz....let alone bass cabs that fall off higher than that.

+1.

I've seen some bands with bone-rattling lows. Sleep, for one. They tune to low C, and their bassist is LOUD. What cabs does he use these days? Ampeg 810s. Before that he used ElectricAmp 415s, but those still likely didn't really do the low C fundamental. Didn't matter.

Everyone is big on the sealed 810. I like the idea of doing a pair of 410s or a 410 and a 15 or 18 for variety. Although I read a lot about not mixing drivers.

I know Carvin has sealed 410s, but they have tweeters.

I know georgestrings mentioned SWR. A sweet deal came up on a SW Megoliath 8x10. Definitely not a sealed 810 sound but I have read that you can boost the Mid EQ to get less of a modern sound, although I like a modern sound.

People say the Megoliath is close to a PH810. I know a dig Mesa cabs. Thoughts?

(Thanks again for all the info everyone, you guys are a ton of help!)

Yeah - the Megoliath is a great cab - go for it, you won't regret it...

Another deal popped up. Megoliath or GK 412 NEO? I feel like I could have thrown around the GK like a rag doll but didn't have a chance to hear it :P

Both are great cabs - the Megoliath is outstanding, sound-wise, but isn't nearly as easy to move as the G-K... Those G-K 412s are really good cabs, and are very easy to move for a big cab... The Megoliath will take - and dish out more punishment than the G-K - it's a real beast, and almost matches my beloved PH810 in terms of performance... I don't think you can go wrong, either way...

In short - the SWR will probably out perform the G-K in regards to sheer volume and low end, but the G-K is no slouch, and is much easy to deal with regarding load in/out...
