Try messing with the EQ. Turn the drive and character all the way down and proceed from there.
Could be that you're just not used to that kind of sound.

I know that I hated how my BDDI sounded choked and not-punchy, but at the right setting it really shines.

ALexa., I'll keep that in mind. I really didn't have the time to really sit with it like I wanted to and troubleshoot. Like I said, my son wasn't feeling well and wanted to play to take his mind off of not feeling well. Worst case, I'll get back to my gear on Monday with a few hours before we practice. I am going to print this thread and take everything mention to heart. I love the tone options the VT has too much to take it to the classified section.

Just an update for you guys who so kindly gave me advise on what to do to fix the issue. None of the suggestions helped at all, so I bypassed it and had my first real playing time with my new Ibanez SR500. As I was playing I noticed how high the pickups were in conjunction to the strings. I pulled out the trusty old phillips head screwdriver and lower the pups a tad. That did the trick, and boy o boy am I happy! Thanks for your advise anyways. I made a troubleshooting check list with your suggestions to keep in my pedaltrain case. Being new to effects, I rather look stupid then be stupid. I'll use a cheat sheet in a heartbeat. Thanks Again guys!

I'm late to the game here but I was going to add that since the level and drive knobs on the VT are very interactive, depending on other EQ settings, etc. and the output of the bass, it can drive the VT into distortion easily if a signal is very hot going in. With my Lakland 44-02, which is hotter than any of my other basses, I have to reduce the 'drive' greatly to get a fully clean sound going in, while keeping the 'level' knob in the same position for all basses. The VT is such an interactive pedal across the board that it's very possible for one bass to require different settings initially to start from scratch.

I just purchased an active bass today and in doesn't get along with my beloved VT pedal AT ALL. Is this common?

Yeah, there was nothing I could do to the VT to make it sound good except shut it off. I went tax refund crazy and bought my first active bass without know much about it except that it felt great and played very well for me (short fingers). I had everything to my liking tonally, except when using the VT. My BOD, P90, BBM all fit well, just the VT wasn't happy. I'm glad it was such a minor adjustment that needed to be done.
