I just joined a christian hardcore band and have never played music like this before much less even listened to it. however, i like it but i am so used to coming up with and playing rock or funk that i dont know how to construct a hardcore bass line. so far i have been just following the rhythm guitar with roots but i would like to broaden my range of playing options. what are some hardcore songs with good bass lines for me to learn from?

it's good to make the bass melodic, but heavy and punchy aswell., add in fast runs, tri-tones are usually used a lot in hardcore.
learn odd timings, a lot of hardcore bands use breakdowns with weird rhythms

it's also good to be able to keep up with the guitars when it comes to shredding and fast licks.
you should probably get used to odd tempos. incase the band is into mathcore. it helps with making the music run smoother and working out the timing around it instead of keeping the music restricted to a single time signater like 4/4. http://youtube.com/watch?v=7JA8K1PDM5M
and very important, have fun. be free when playing, hardcore audiences like bands that get into their music, so don't stand still. it's a great way to let out built up aggression or stress actually, just let loose to the music.

between the buried and me is an amazing harcore band. you should check them out they will make your head spin.
but it seems in this genre the bassist is either crazy fast and good or they just play roots the entire time. but since the guitars are so crazy most of the time its good to stick with the drummer. but if you want to go crazy and riff like hell id say go for it as long as you know enough theory to be able to play something that sounds good over the guitar.

Still pretty lost with where you're trying to get. When I think Hardcore, I think Dead Kennedys. Dead Kennedys meet Jesus? That would be a site to behold. Give a couple of your "hardcore" influences so we can aid you better?
We probably need a little more info. Do they play in time signatures other than 4/4? What bands are they influenced by? A lot of the early hardcore bassists (think Black Flag, Minor Threat, etc.) had very similar styles, but a lot of the current ones are very different from each other and do lots of different things, especially stuff in the "progressive" or "math" varieties (think Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, etc.). Also "hardcore" and "metal" bands tread a very thin line nowadays, so it's not surprising to see a metal band get called hardcore and vice versa. In fact, many people just use the lazy term "metalcore." Someone once wrote in Maximum Rock and Roll or Punk Planet that most hardcore nowadays that gets reviewed is just one minute metal songs.

+2 for Between The Buried And Me. Dan Briggs is amazing on bass and you can buy a book with most of the songs of their last album "Alaska" It has tabs as well if you can't read music
one of my band's favorite bands is The Devil Wears Prada. we cover dogs can grow beards all over. our sound and style is a lot like that. and we usually dont play in 4/4. if we do it just a momentary timing change before going into something else.
