Hardening punky wood, burls

I'd wonder if the flame would be a bit harsh on this soft wood. Not sure though. I was going to dyes and/or pigmented paints to get some cool coloration.

I've had great luck with Keda dyes.
The torch would worsen the brittleness of the wood. The punky stuff would lose even more cohesion , and turn to ash quickly.

This why we do test pieces..
