Oh wait, I thought of another one that was worse than the one I already posted---Daufuskie Island, off the SC coast. OMG, it was awful.
First of all, it was cold as hell with a 20mph constant wind along the coast and intercoastal waterways. We drove our equipment truck (the biggest size box truck you can get), full to the gills, to a dock where we were to meet a boat to take us over to the island. Oh, but first we had to put everything that was in our truck in these four-wheeled covered dolly things (they were big things with car tires). It took five, I think it was, to hold all our gear. Then, those things were pulled onto the boat with a tractor. Good grief, we were absolutely frozen by then. I can't believe we had to do that instead of being able to drive our truck onto something instead.
Well, after all that we had a nice freezing boat ride for about twenty minutes. There was a cabin we could all sit in out of the wind, though. Not too bad. BUT...once we docked on the island we had to unload the dolly things into another box truck. So, that was twice we had moved all our stuff. Again, unbelievable. Why we couldn't pull the dollies to the gig place, I dunno. So, again we rode, this time in the truck and some other vehicles to the big house we were to play at. Sheesh, then after about two hours we could finally load our stuff (again, in the cold) into the house.
Played the gig---four hours. Packed up and began loading the truck, all the time thinking how we had to undergo the same routine again with the dollie things and the boat ride back, AND then reload our truck, too. Except this time it was dark, and really freezing in the wind. And also including the fact that...
THE TRUCK WOULDN'T CRANK!!!! Godamighty!!!
Here we were after all this and then had to wait another hour for a tech to get there to work oh their truck. By then it was almost becoming comical---but no, it was maniacal. It was like being imprisoned in the underworld..."Despair all hope..."
The only good thing I saw in all this so far was a really dark, clear sky while riding in the back of their equipment truck back to the boat (I'm an amateur astronomer, so...). Anyway, we unloaded their truck, reloaded the dollies, got them on board, rode the boat back, reloaded our truck, and got back home around 7am. I was still freezing. I made $300, and told the band leader that he'd have to get a sub for me next time, not worth it. He said he didn't wanna go back, so...
That was even worse than the time we had to ride a WWII landing craft over to another island (but we had our truck with us that time) and then three of us rode in the bucket of a front-end loader down a sandy road to the gig site, LOL. The rest got to ride in a car. Another $300 gig that was about $300 short, IMO.
I'm keeping a watch out for scenarios like that nowadays, so I can avoid them, yessiree.
