Double Bass Hardshell for NS

Well, I finally made one of the previously discussed PVC Cases for my custom EUB. The case is about 58" long and it is made 6" schedule 40 PVC. That's definetly more heavy duty than is needed but that is all I could get in 6". I made a bag for the bass out of doubled over fleece to protect the bass. So far so good, the pluses are that it was cheap ($50), easy to build, it's super heavy duty, it's fits the bass rather well, and it's totally waterproof! The cons are that it is super heavy (it weighs as much as the bass itself), and the stand (or anything else for that matter) doesn't fit inside. But it does it's job and it's going to be my only option until i get around to building a wooden case for it.

That's what I really like about the Undercover GigBag designed for the NS basses - there are pockets for everything and it is really light!

So - I can sling my NSCR5 over my shoulder in the bag and have hands free to carry amps etc.

I find the thick but light padding is enough to protect it - as these things aren't as fragile as a real DB and I'd rather sacrifice a bit of "total protection", for lightness and portability! :)

Yeah, but I figure your not tossin' yours in the back of a pick up truck and headin down a country road. Or the high school band trailer for that matter. I just don't think that a soft case could give me enough peace of mind. :hmm: ...

Well, I can only agree with Bruce.

I bought a Undercover Gigbag form Gard at BassCentral as well. It's light, got GOOD padding and got all the pockets.

I study music here in the UK but I travel a lot the Denmark and Norway with my bass (Danish citizen). I have no problem taking the NS with me on flights. It goes straight into the cabin hangin' on my shoulder...

Well, I would go for a custom wooden case if I was going on tour where you have to stack it in a trailer. It's expensive yes, but how much does your upright mean to you? -it's always worth spending on a proper case.

By the way, if you want to protect your bow (and not pay for a real bow-case) use one of the hard cardbox tubes that are used for posters. It's pretty tough and does the job.

Some of those camara/lighting tripod cases seem pretty heavy duty as well as lightweight, like for packing into a film location equipment truck. It tooks like one company makes them up to 60" long.

I've used an EUB on the road quite a bit the last couple of years and have been using the snowboard tube as was shown in a previous post. It has proven to be a pretty sturdy way to check your bass on the plane or haul it under the bus; the wheels are still working BTW. You just want to carry around extra hitch pins because the airline security people will invariably lose the one that's on the case once in a while. I wrap foam rubber around the middle of the bass and another piece around the head and it travels fine.

That being said, if I had been aware of another case dedicated to EUB that was a few bucks more, I would have snapped it up. Here's one and if it will fit your bass, it's a good one:

Well, you have a point there, but the Azola-case is much bigger then the NS one.

Would the Undercover NS-softbag w. stand AND a bass-bow in a case fit into the NS ATA one??... Don't think so I'm afraid. :crying:

Besides, I would NEVER EVER put my NS-bass in a flight-case with stand in the original bags that comes with the bass. The quality is insanely poor on those bags, how can the even do that? :hmm: Why don't they just get a deal with Undercover Bags to provide gig-bags for them from the beginning? They should make the ATA to fit the Undercover-bag too...

I have a friend who also's got a NS and he put his bass in the original bags in the case, it came out of there with big MARKS in the neck!!! No thanks... :eyebrow:

i lucked out and got the ns case used from bass central for 250 bucks
i believe you could probably get a custom company to make one,
i priced one out before finding the used one,
same ata spec as the ns case but with corner wheels for about
the same price. best thing about the ns is the dedicated space for
a bow or accessories. bass and stand in case weighs in at 46 lbs,
most airline restrictions start at 50 lbs.
i would've bought a new one for sure if i didn't find the used one...
after investing considerably in the instrument, i felt it
would only be reasonable to also invest a 5th or so of the price to protect it for real.

p.s.
i couldn't get my ns to fit in the case with either the crappy original
soft tube or the decent aftermarket bag. just a little too big, you might be able to force the case shut, but i wasn't willing to push it.
i added a couple pieces of foam and made it fit glove-tight.
the bow fits in the extra comparment area easily.

i just wanted to mention that another tb'er has a really nice heavy-duty flight case for the ns with wheels(like a keyboard case) for a great price! heavier duty than the factory flight case i have,
for less than half the new cost, which is a great deal.:cool:

I had hybrid cases http://www.hybridcases.com/ build a case for my zeta strados(59'' tall) that comes to 58 lbs with the bass, soft case inside and bow case. They did it to my specs for $275. I've already flown 6 flights with no problems. I do get charged an oversize fee, usually $80($25 on alaskan air). it's the heavy duty, "Tank Tube shipping container". A bit overkill, but indestructable...

I've got the perfect solution, it only costs $69.00, it offers great protection and its VERY light.

Its a fishing pole flight case made by Frabill. I bought mine at Gander Mountain sporting goods store. It extends, but you don't need to extend it to fit an NS EUB. It fits perfectly, foam inside, hard outside casing, has padlock holes, etc.

There are only two slight issues with this case. First, you can't fit the NS tripod stand in it. The tripod must ride separately somewhere else. Secondly, you have to pull out the two clear plastic container drawers in the middle (easy to do, they snap right out) and need to take a utility knife to a few strips of thin plastic inside the middle of the case so the NS's neck will fit with the case closed. It took me about 20 minutes with a simple $1.99 utility knife to get it perfect.

The padding is excellent, the NS doesn't move within the case AT ALL. There is about an inch free all around the sides of the bass, and about two inches extra space from tip to tip. The outer shell is nice and thick and the case is very sturdy. I'd have no qualms at all about checking my EUB with luggage on an airplane in this case. Its a great solution.
