Hey TB!! I have gotten a lot of good info from you all. Thank you!

My question...I have a Hartke B300 combo(30 watts) for our music room. My son plays drums so I really have to crank up the volume to where the sound starts distorting to hear myself. I know a bigger amp would be ideal but would a speaker swap work in the meantime? Seems like the stock speaker doesn't like to be cranked up as it seems the amp has power to push a speaker rated to handle more power.

Your amp is basically a bedroom amp, designed for solo or quiet practice at home. If you play with a drummer you really need at the very least a 12" speaker and 100w. Or tell your drummer to play as quitly as possible.

Ok that was what I thought too but figured to ask. Didn't want to spend $300 or so on a new amp. Maybe a used one on CL would suffice. Play quietly?? That boy pounds those drums like no tomorrow!LOL

Teach that a good drummer has dynamics, must know how to play soft, hard, in between.

It will help you a lot to put your amp on a table or desk so it's closer to ear level. It'll also help if you stand at least 5 or 6 feet in front of it rather than right next to it.

Your absolutely right on the dynamics. He gets excited and into it and whamo..hard hitting.lol But he is getting better for a 12 year old.

Ya, I tried stepping about 10 feet away. I even tried walking into the hallway while playing. Think I will get a bigger amp. I am sure my wife will be aboard.Lol

Ok, small update. Decided to upgrade the speaker first. I ordered a Eminence Basslite S2010 driver. It's rated at 150watts and 96db sensitivity. I have a feeling it's going to handle the power and sound great.

Your amp still only puts out 30 watts though (I have an older version of the same amp btw). You should try to find a used amp on CL for what you are using it for.

Ya I know the amp is still only 30 watts. It's used in our music room. I just need a little louder undistorted sound. I have been looking on CL and while there are a few more powerful amps, I haven't found one yet that grabs me. Well, if it doesn't work out it will be a nice sounding 30 watt amp!

I got a Peavey mini max that I love. I’m down to two cabs now and both are overkill for most things. I was looking at the 210s though.
I did some searching and found this thread because I ordered an 8 inch speaker by accident and was trying to find a use for it before buying something else. Thanks for the replies everyone. Will look into those 210s.

Ampeg hit a home run with the SVT210AV cab. It captures that sweet classic tone of the big 8x10 fridge. Notes you can hear as well as feel. I have to get one. Also interested in the Trace Elliott ELF 2x8 and the Revsound 2x8, both of which are more expensive than the Ampeg but come loaded with more powerful drivers.

I’ve been looking at those as well. I love the revsound stuff on paper(page) but can’t justify anymore big purchases this year. My other two cabs are the svt410hlf and 610hlf. Both are great and I love them but my band is going for a clean stage look with minimal amps on stage. That little Trace Elliot 110 is catching my eye too

I would sell the big Ampeg's or trade them in. A pair of the SVT210AV's will cover any gig and they're easy as heck to carry. Not expensive at all and they can be stacked vertically, a big plus in my book. Same for the ELF's or Revsounds, although two of them gets expensive. I would guess that a single Revsound would cover most gigs by itself. The higher end cabs can be pushed hard, and by dialing out some bass and adding some low mids, will get quite loud.

Holy cow I totally forgot about this thread!!! Lost track as I had some surgery last fall and was out for a bit.

I did replace the driver and it’s night and day over the original driver. The only mod was routing the opening bigger to allow the wider basket to drop in. That little 30w amp is a little bass bomb now! It’s not a 200w amp or even 100w but it’s plenty undistorted loud now. I can hear myself over the drums. Hartke should have put a driver like this from the get go.

I still want a bigger amp so....someday.
