hartke problem

last week I was at practice with my HA5000 running a single 8ohm cab at about half volume on the "High Frequency" channel, pre amps at about 6 on tube and 5 on solid state EQ all 0ed with the exception of a dip in 64hz to -5, crossover off and contours @ 12 o'clock. about 45 minutes in of light playing it crapped out. totally cut off for a second and came back with a cutting in and out sound really low. I tried cutting off the tube pre to make sure it wasnt the tube but it does it regardless of using the tube or SS preamp. "low frequency channel works though I am thinking it has a metallic buzz on low e through low A now. fan in the back is working fine and it wasnt hot so I dont think it overheated. a week later im still having the problems. Any ideas? Its been a good little amp until now. I planned on using it with PA support for bigger gigs, would like to try and save it if its cost isn't too expensive. (considering this is pretty much gonna be used with PA support on gigs)

See if you can borrow a preamp from someone, even some POS. Plug your bass into the preamp and then run the preamp into the Hartke's effects return jack. If the problem goes away, then the Hartke preamp's to blame. If the problem persists, then the Hartke power amp's to blame or it's a power supply problem.

I assume your AC power is ok, the power cord's ok (no one ran it over w/ something heavy & scrunched it), speaker cord's ok & plugged in tight, you don't have five 100W Marshalls plus your amp running off the same 20A breaker, etc. etc., all the usual gotchas...

yeah ac power cord is good its plugged into a furman conditioner and never gets unplugged or moved, speaker cord is fine too doesnt do the same thing if i plug it in the lower channel as the upper channel so its definitley the unit itself. only pre I have is on the bass itself a tone pump would that work or I need to find like a sansamp or something off someone?

I had similar problem with HA2500. I popped the lid and found that the screw that mounts the grounding wire from the input was loose. I put some Locktite on all the screws mounting the PC cards and fixed the problem. Also did the same to my HA3500 after I bought it.

A problem I had with mine was one of the big capacitors came loose from its solder joint.

It would cut out, but if I turned it on its side it would work. When I did this, the cap would lean over just enough to make contact. I'm not sure about your model, but mine has a relay in it, when the cap lost contact the relay dropped out. When it made contact, the relay pulled back in.

BTW.. Its cool as hell that you are here offering your help Larry. *That* is customer service at its best!

well this is more of an on off constant like the sound is chopping in and out non stop like speaking into a fan, I didn't find anything loose when i opened it, though I wasn't looking to start pulling stuff either. was basically just looking for burnt circuits, or swollen caps
