Im too poor to own a bass with a nitro finish,even then can't say I smell by basses enough to know.

That is true, every time I open my Les Paul's case, the room fills with that nitro smell.To my nose there's nothing subtle about the fragrance of nitrocellulose lacquer.

Yes... I notice it each time I open my hard shell case for the one Strat that has a nitro 'burst finish on it... it does tend smell a bit odd, and thats not always a consistant odor either...
I just live with it as it does not get played as much as the basses anyway.

Even though nitro laquer is probably cured to prevent combustion, I wonder if it can still just spontaneously conflagrate.
Its two main ingredients, guncotton and acetone, are some of the most combustible products around.

Spontaneously? Maybe under the right circumstances. Have you ever removed used filters from a spray booth in which ncl has been sprayed and struck said filters with a hammer?
Spend enough time in the spray booth shooting nitro and you'll see pink elephants!
No doubt! For 7 years straight the primary part of my job as a cabinet maker was spraying laquer....if you do so with no vent fan, you won't need skittles to taste the rainbow!
Isn't guncotton used in making flashpaper? I would assume that a filter covered in nitro would act in a similar fashion.
There is an old story that before they found a way to cure nitro, the billiard balls they varnished with celluloid would often combust if they hit another ball hard enough.
