The last time somebody touched my gear, it cost me $35 to replace the strings because his hands were so acidic. And he played for just a few minutes. So gross. He was a bandmate's kid which is why I relented.

Man...did you deck this POS in the face? Sometimes assault is acceptable, and if that were my bass, I'd be in jail. Especially if it that was deliberate.
Every time I've lent a guitar, somehow it seems to get buckle rash on the back.

Ew! I think I prefer the buckle rash.Maybe take a 'Belt deposit' when you loan a bass? Either that or they have to play pantless![]()
I should have.
Back than it honestly never occurred to me that there would be people that were either musicians or in music circles that would have animosity towards someone for having nice things, much less show it either verbally or physically like that.
I've seen it in a few other people since than, including people I played music with that I considered friends, "oh there's glocke1 with his bass that costs more than the ceiling in this place".
At this point I consider that behavior to be a sign of disrespect, and have pretty much cut those folks out of my life.
Mere minutes later, the FOH guy comes running over to me and demands to know why I won't loan the bass to the headliner. Again, I state my reasons. He then says that the gig will now not happen and goes away in a rage. Stupidly, and for the first and only time, I relent.
If they told me they had to cancel the show I’d say let them cancel, not my problem if people can’t look after their gear.

I was involved in a work trade years ago. I worked in a mechanic shop, and guns, crappy cars, and musical instrument flowed like honey... Anyways, in this trade, I ended up with a Red MIM Strat and a Twin Reverb amp... the guitar played nice, but the thing looked like it had acne scars. Pockmarks all over it. Not worn through the poly, but just dents all over it, like a golf ball. I never asked the guy what happened, but I was real curious.I've bought a few that were played so hard by mystery maniacs that you could call it abuse if they hadn't taken care of the essentials, the character they exude is worth their price alone.
