My brother was filling in for a band, so asked if he could borrow one of my basses. Lent him an early ’70s Beatle Bass copy, which was fine but told him it was in dire need of a setup. Apparently he mentioned this to a mate he was staying with. Said mate then decided he would set my bass up for me. Tried to adjust the neck but the truss rod was ‘tight’, so he decided to give it a bit more oomph. Truss rod straight through the fretboard. So he then decided to repair it himself, and replaced the fretboard with a length of highly glossed Merbau, fretless, but fret makers burnt into the side of the neck with a soldering iron, and set for a 34” neck, not a 30”. And while he was at it, decided to rewire the electronics to give me ‘more tonal possibilities’ !!! No apologies, but very proud of his efforts, saying “it’s only a cheapie”. It was pretty much unplayable.
This bass has sentimental value to me, (that’s another story), and I’ve repaired it myself to where it’s playable, but it ain’t the same.
