I was thinking earlier that it would be great to be able to carry my bass around in its hard case, on my back like a gig bag. So I thought, what about getting some safety straps with clips, clipping them round the case and attaching some backpack straps to that securely.

Would this work without the case falling and being damaged? Has it already been invented?

A gig bag has some give-and-take, so it can flex as you move instead of flipping the headstock into the back of your head. If you tried to strap the case directly to your back I think it'd hit you in the head as you walked. I suppose it might work if the backpack was like a pouch you could slip the end of the case into.

Yes, they are expensive (but so is your bass)

Once you use a top rate gig bag you will never use your hard case again.

This is my current gig bag. It's a quality one, £55 worth, and it has 5-6cm padding all round, But, I dunno, it just doesn't seem like it would be anywhere near as good as the hard case. It's still a very slightly flexible and when we load the van for gigs there's a lot of Tetris going on. I just don't want my bass to get damaged.

Certainly it's possible, if you raised it high enough so that the 'action' your buttocks create isn't bouncing against the case, in turn smacking the top of the case into your noggin with each step. Only you can assess your assets and how much bounce they will create.

As for your question if the case should fall and become damaged? Isn't that the point of a hard case: to take the damage in a fall/drop? Maybe Fender should offer 'Road Worn' cases. Hmmmm.

Get the SKB bass safe, you insert your bass in its gig bag into it. You don't want to look like a wanka carrying a hard shell case on your back. :D

Based on what you wrote you want more protection for you bass while it's in a truck amidst other equipment not while it's on your back. The Bass Safe gives you that and then you simply remove your bass in the gig bag and put that on your back. Make sense?
