Hate to confess this.

I have a small collection of somewhat more "expensive" basses that has been carefully curated over time, but the tone that Julia gets out of this $300 SUB Ray is really calling to me.

This is one great bass. I have a 2013 SUB 4, a 90's Fender Precision, and a 1980 MusicMan Stingray, among others. All are great basses, but the SUB, due to its slim neck and extremely fast action, is the clear winner for hard rock. I have not modified it all, except to pull the frets and lower the action. Everything else is stock and I love it. It was only $275, shipping included, delivered to my door with a free set of Rotos. Can't beat the price or the tone.

I picked this Squire up for $300. Put Hipshot Kickass bridge, Graphtec nut, SD Apollo pick ups and TI flats on it. It has a great sound. My jammin’ buddies love this bass, so do I.

My wife won’t even let me play my RAY 4 in the house! She just doesn’t like the tone of the bass ! but she absolutely loves my 76 precision so that’s the one I get to play in the house. And I have to admit I really like the sound of the Ray

I find myself reaching for my Ray 4 most of the time. I really enjoy playing it. Sounds so good with Aguilar pickup.

No problem. I love the sound, and everything else of my $269.00 Epi EB-0, over almost every Gibson SG Std. I've had over the years, @ $1500.00. Quality Control as well for the Epi, over most Gibson SG Std.'s also.

The Epi EB-0. A 30.5" neck, 12" radius fretboard, and a 1.5" Jazz size nut. The Sidewinder Humbucking, puts out a great clear, deep low tone. New price, $269., restrung with D'Addario ETB92S Nylons. This is the one bass I will not part with.

Just to simplify a response. The Ray is mid focused, the QP's have a huge mid scoop. Try a set of original Fender PU's in the P....your view may change.

Hate to confess this, but I prefer the sound of my $299 Sterling Ray 4 over my Fender P.

Whatever gets the sound you want is the right bass for you.

I have 5 criteria when looking at basses; weight, tone, feel, looks and price. The make comes so far down the list it's in the next zip code.

Glad you've found a bass that "speaks" to you so strongly.

I have a '98 P bass (MIM), but only because it was given to me when a friend died. I was also given his '74 Tele Deluxe. I NEVER liked the P Bass (from 1968 on) but was a fan of the Jazz Bass & interested in just about anything not Fender or Gibson (excepting the Jazz). Everyone was (is) playing P basses & I didn't want to be like everyone else. My 'sister' had a '62 & then a '73 Jazz Bass with an Orange 4-12 cab.

Love the QPs. Has a big sound that will compete with the drummer. Playing it at my gig tomorrow night. Tiny gig, no room for a drummer though

Like many others have observed, different basses for different moods. Every one of the two dozen or so basses I own evokes a particular feeling in me, each makes me want to play a little differently and play different music, which is why I keep them all. Every time I reintroduce one to the rotation I delight in rediscovering what made me love it in the first place! I like steak but not for every meal!
