I don’t believe the effect we hear when we boil strings is the result of boiling the strings. There’s nothing wrong with cleaning strings. Ultrasonic cleaners are probably the best. The jewelry industry uses nothing but. It gets rid of crud deep within anything. But I think what’s happening is simply the result of taking the strings off the bass and relaxing them to their neutral “position”. The core of any instrument string is made with a type of spring steel. If you stretch a string (or spring) long enough the steel begins to deform due to stress. Loosening the tension on the spring brings the steel back to its original molecular position somewhat, but it’s only temporary. That’s what I believe we are hearing. I think if you loosen strings completely over night and tune them back up you will get the same sonic results of boiling them, minus the benefits of cleaning.
To increase the life of strings it would make more sense to loosen them completely when not in use. Most people don’t do this of course because maintaining pitch is more difficult. Also, the added longevity would have to be significant enough to warrant the trouble.
