Head+cab question!

hi, i've looked about on the site and although found some things similar, nothing exact so thought i would post this and try reach an exact answer

Im thinking of getting a Line 6 Lowdown HD400 head, and using it with a Ashdown 410 Mag 450w cab. The cab is 8ohms and i assume the head is 4 ohms.

Is it okay to use a 4ohm head with a 8ohm cab, just one of them, not two. Will this reduce the amount of power output and by how much??

Check the manual and check the 8 ohm output wattage - you will be alright. Check the amp forum for the "sticky" about ohms.

IIRC, the LD400 has an 8 ohm extension output. I think the amp goes down to 4, but the internal speakers are wired for 8. So , the amp sees 4ohm only when you plug in an 8ohm extension cab.
But you should read the manual, just in case I'm wrong.

Just saw you were talking about the head; I thought you were talking about the combo. Apologies.

Solid state amps do not need to be matched to the load as do tube amps. So long as the cabinet's impedance is no lower than the minimum specified by the amp maker, all will be well - there's no maximum impedance (although the power output decreases as the cabinet impedance increases).

i'm looking at the HD750 head now, some people seem to think the HD400 isnt loud enough.
Anybody used a HD400???

There's nothing wrong with having more power - no law says you have to use it. That being said, most guys are too loud no matter how small their amp
