Head + Power Amp?

I've got an issue - I love the Ampeg SVT3-Pro in terms of tone, EQ ability and features. However, I feel that 280 watts might not be loud enough. Ive noticed there are several other nice heads that I'm looking at that are just underpowered for bigger gigs jammin etc. and it got me thinking.....

What would one do to set up a power amp with a seperate head (power amp + preamp in one package)? How much does the power amp affect the tone you get? Could you get a nice small head and a cheap power amp and still get the same tone?

Use the SVT-III for jaming, and get a seperate power amp for larger gigs.

You use the line out, on the Ampeg, and go into the power amp. plug your speakers in the power amp.

That is why I originally went with an SVT4PRO. Now I use an Eden 260 for practice and use a QSC2402 if I need more power. I like this a lot. If I needed to take both with me more than 1/2 the time I would get sick of it though. So I would say if you need more power often just get an SVT4(or another head that will push what you need and give you the sound you love). But if you only need it for 1 or 2 gigs then a power amp would be jsut fine. I have found the QSC to be excelent.

Thats how I run my rig all the time. Eden Wt-405 to a power amp. Hopefully one of the outs on your amp also is controled by your amps volume knob, then it's a piece of cake. You can then have as many watts as you want, and yes it will sound the same as your amp always does. The Power amp just amplifies what comes in, and cranks it back out, with more juice. Read your manual, or maybe somebody else on here who owns one can tell you which signal out to use. On the Eden, it's the headphone out jack, that is on the volume knob. On others , you may have to use the effects line out. It's the only way to fly.
