Headed/Headless Combo

While cruising my favorite Steinberger information site (Steinberger World), I came across a page for an obscure prototype bass. It was a fretted/fretless combo, in one neck. You just turn a dial, and frets pop up. They said it was weak, because the neck was hollow.

Now, I have some ideas on how to fix the weak neck issue (all involving Kevlar), but how do you make such a device? I'm waiting for a response from Gibson (which I do not expect to be positive), but in the meantime, I figure I could get something from e'eryone here (whose opinions I value higher than even Gibson's).

I would watch who you tell about your idea, before you know it, someone will go and patent it and youll be **** outa luck. But i dont know who would be able to make something like what you are describing.
