I just read somewhere that Jaco played with the Headhunters for a short period of time.Is that true and are any recordings available of that group?

Headhunters w/Jaco?

I heard that in passing too. It's possible that he sat in with them or did a gig here or there. However, dare I say, (yes I do) I don't think the Headhunters would be the Headhunters without Paul Jackson. He is such an integral part of the sound. No disrespect to Jaco, though.
I have a recording of a gig Jaco did with the Headhunters in the late 70's (it says '77, but I' not sure if it's correct or not). It's circulating somewhere in the torrent/dimeadozen arena. As Nickybass correctly assumes, it doesn't really work the same way with Jaco, and the result is mediocre and quite forgettable compared to Flood, for example. Not because Jaco's involved, but because Jackson isn't. It's worth a listen to hear for yourselves, but it won't blow you away.
Man, I would have thought if Jaco was on form he would have slayed! Jackson was a good fit for the band though.
that was the problem, he was on form.....for jaco. which doesnt have the same stank funk that paul jackson has. thus, that lineup didnt really work.
I have a live CD from one of those shows, I love Jaco, but he did not fit the Headhunters feel at all. IMHO. One of those looked could on paper deelios.
I agree...actually, I had forgotten that I even had this cd (bought at Audiophile Imports a couple years back).

Thanks guys, you're right, I have Flood, and what I heard in the samples doesn't even compare.
Paul Jackson is actually the reason why I started playing the bass and he really fit that band perfectly.Big shoes to fill even for Jaco.
It's just that I like Herbie's tune 4 AM which Jaco played on so I was hoping that the concert was somewhat on that level.
Marcus Miller ( also one of my big inspirations) played with the Headhunters as well.More recently.I don't know if that ever got recorded.Marcus might be a better fit.

I agree - so we all knew that Jaco played with Herbie - but that doesn't make it "HeadHunters" - which to me, is characterised by the bass/drums/percussion "feel" that particular rhythm section got/get!

Well yeah, that makes it utterly impossible for Jaco to ever play with the "real" Headhunters, no matter which lineup, except in a 2xbass format.
Does anyone know whether these gigs were advertised (back then, not as todays marketing tricks) as The Headhunters or something like The Herbie Hancock Group or Quartet?
Well I think HeadHunters was a concept to do with a heavy funk feel and African rhythms - so it's quite possible for another bass player to take that on - as has been mentioned - no doubt somebody like Marcus Miller or Victor Wooten could do it!
But it's not something Jaco ever did.

A few months back, Bass Player had a brief article/transcription about Nathan East gigging as a "Headhunter".
For me, it's gotta be Jackson & Clarke (Yes, Clarke over Mason for me).

I wouldn't like Headhunters with Jaco: Paul Jackson laid down some solid grooves that I think really made for some awesome tunes, Jaco would have been all over the place, which is cool sometimes. But PJ gets my vote.

I agree on all counts.....Jackson & Clarke were like Rocco & Garibaldi.
