Headhunters w/Jaco?

Although I do really like Jamiroquai and have most of their albums - I thought the bass on this sounded quite poor and listening to the Headhunters original straight after - what struck me was how much better the bass sounded as soon as it entered! A few seconds of that bass and it's obvious who it was and how much better! :p

I did not mean to suggest that Zender perfectly mimiced Jackson. Zender has a pretty distinctive style that happens to work well with sort of music, IMO. More so than Jaco, who was the original focus of this post.

BTW, I agree with Brad and Bruce that Paul Jackson is way too idiosyncratic to really copy. I just lift a lick or two and do my own thing when I am in my Paul Jackson bag!:)

A big +1. I was thinking the same thing.

At least one of them was doing a note for note imitation, the problem being it's not about the notes... it's what you do with them. Putting them in the right spot with the wrong (or even total) lack of emphasis misses the point.


I also marvelled at how much PJ "didn't" sound like he was playing a Jazz bass on a Jazz bass type instrument. The hands.

Gary Willis. I recall a reviewer of Tribal Tech's Face First asking Willis if the title track was his "Jaco thing"...Willis said it was actually a nod to Paul Jackson.

The coolest thing to me about the MC/PJ clip is it reminds me of someone trying to jump on a fast moving carousel... while most people would be looking for an opening to jump in on one of Mike's ridiculously synchopated grooves, Jackson just falls right in, again and again.

I just recieved "Survival of the Fittest" in the mail today, and what Brad Johnson says about Paul Jackson being inimitable is so true. I could memorize his lines, but I doubt if I couold ever cop his feel or logic of note choices. What is also cool is that PJ sang lead on "God Made me Funky" too!:eek:

Just imagine what the Bay area must have been like in 1975, Larry Graham, Rocco Prestia, Paul Jackson, Bobby Vega, Rustee Allen, and Doug Rauch were all doing it there. That was a cosmic convergence of not only talent but orginality too.

For the beginning part - but when the piano solo kicks in, Paul Jackson's bass line is one of the most awesome in Jazz/Funk ever!! :)
