headlining and microphones

My band headlined at a bigger show for the first time a couple weeks ago and we left our mics, guitars, etc up there. The bands that played before us used our mics, and i was really uncomftrable singing that night. i had to make sure my mouth wasn't touching the mic because i didn't wanna get germs or herpes. How would one clean the grill, and any suggestions for next time we're headlining so my mic won't be used? I'm kind of a germaphobe

Don't leave your mic up there.

Why do you need to provide gear? That makes no sense.

You can unscrew the top of a mic, to remove the grill. Then if you desire, you can also remove the internal foam of the grill. With only the metal left, disinfect to your heart's delight. Then re-assemble.

If you're a germaphobe, then don't loan out your mic. It's your personal mic. Many singers feel this way too, especially "mic kissers". Take your mic off the stand and keep it with you when the other bands play.

I buy Zeiss pre-moistened lens wipes for my DSLR lenses and glasses.
They have pure isopropyl alcohol, so are also useful for a quick disinfecting job.
I use them on mics all the time.
They're in little individual pouches, so it's convenient to stash a few in my toolbox.

The Zeiss ones are available cheap at WalMart, and there are other brands like Bausch & Lomb in other stores.

Yeah, I absolutely hate to share mics, and bought my own SM58 a couple of years ago to avoid such a situation... When my band has an opener, we soundcheck with our own stuff - then I take my mic off the clip 'til we go on... At that point, it's up to the sound crew or the guy in "my" space to provide a mic for the opening set...

I don't think you can get the herps from sharing a mic, but they do get pretty nasty that way - and I'd imagine that a cold could be passed along that way...
