Greetings from the North,

Was wondering if anyone knew if there was such a thing as a headphone amp that was capable of recording direct and was the size of a walkman? It would just be for practicing and for those moments when you come up with a cool lick that you don't wanna lose. Thanks in advance.

Check out the Phil Jones Bass Buddy. It is a little bigger than a walkman, but definetly worth a look at the price it is going for being such a quality piece of gear.

There's the Boss Micro BR that's "slightly bigger than an iPod" that was announced at Summer NAMM. It's street price is around $230USD. It records to flash RAM and allows you to work with 4 tracks and 32 virtual tracks per tune. It'll also play back mp3 files and allow you to adjust speed without changing pitch.

I'm seriously considering one (there's a thread about it in the Recording Gear forum which I just bumped). Maybe if I'm a good boy between now and Xmas I can ask the missus for one. :)

Greetings,

The Bass Buddy is a bit bigger than I needed and the Micro BR has way more features than I needed. Both seem to be great products though. Just wanted something simple and little with immediate playback capabilty but I will check out the Micro.

In addition to the Boss Micro, there's the Korg PXR4 and Zoom PS04. Both of those record to smart media cards though, which is yesterday's technology.

The Boss uses an SD card. Not sure if that's a smart media card or not. Even though 2GB SD cards are available the Micro BR brochure only lists compatibility with cards up to 1GB in size.
