Headphone suggestions for Mesa Boogie Subway 800+

Aside from live mixing work where I'm usually only quickly checking PFL'd sources or individual monitor mixes, I run my headphones at a very low level. I find good quality closed back phones allow a lower overall volume than open.

This is not correct, the headphone output is always active. You may not hear the headphones over the sound from the cabinet however.

I have the tt 800 mesa Amp, and indeed, if it is plugged into a cabinet, the headphone jack does not produce sound. When you uplug it from the cab, works fine. Is it supposed to be that way or is the tt 800 same as the rest of the subway seris in regards to the headphone output? I thout this was kind of strange an it's not mentioned in the manual.

I use the Sennheiser HD650 for basically everything that's not wireless.
They do have a whopping 320 Ohms, but that just means they won't be very loud at some sources. I have a
mobile Fiio preamp that lives in the transport box for the Sennheisers, but you'd be surprised how many sources that are rated at less than 100 ohms can drive the Sennheisers well enough.

Not sorry - I wouldn’t touch any PJB product with anyone’s ten foot pole. Those headphones broke on me fairly quickly and the C4 I got was substandard. I went on the PJB fb forum to voice my concerns with their QC in general and got publicly reamed by the man himself. No thanks.

Do they use the same teeny tiny little drivers in their headphones as they use in their cabs?

Sony 7506 replaced my 70's vintage Koss Pro 4AA headphones decades ago. I really like the 7506 sound and lighter weight...not to mention they fold down and can be carried in bag about the size of one the Pro 4AA earpieces.

Another vote for the Sony 7506’s, also get a set of “softies” ear pad covers, great for sweat and eliminates the possibility of ear pads peeling as they age

No, this is impossible based on how the amp is designed and wired. It's exactly the same as all of the other Subway models.

There must be something else going on.
