Headrush 2000 watt 8"

Let’s be clear here. On bass the 8” speaker starts to sound like crap at 25% of amp range volume. Nowhere near enough to be useful for bass outside bedroom/isolated studio situation.
My 30W bass amp through a single 10” speaker is louder.

I don’t know what the amp is really capable of because the speaker can’t handle bass. The 12” headrush may be better but I wouldn’t get one for bass.

slight change of topic, but i notice there is a spot for a pole mount in the bottom, correct? i'm wondering how this would work for upright bass in a quartet with a heavy handed drummer (not metal loud though). i've been looking at the qsc stuff, but this is way less expensive...
also, how would it work as a speaker to listen to tunes on from my phone?

I popped over from the DB side when I saw this Thread title.
I never played metal, so apologies to the OP. Shwashwa, I use the FRFR108 every week for DB (3/4 4 string carved bass) alternating between a Django style group and a jazz group (e piano / sax / e guitar / vocalist / sensible drummer).
I am using a Shertler DynB and Pre A III, I have the Headrush on a pole about neck height a couple of metres behind me and to the side. Volume control on 4 (out of '11' :)). We play outside and there is no PA support for the bass. Everyone loves the tone, and it is plenty loud enough and clean. I believe the 12" would be too bassy for my purposes.

Quite different from the OP’s needs it seems.

Certainly and this monitor likely had some DSP "magic" to overcome limitations (within physical limitations). I really like the idea of powered, DSP'ed speakers. PA's mostly moved the amp into the speaker, I think it's just a matter of time before that happens with MI applications. Bass cabs first, because guitarists will be the holdouts.
Bergantino IPs a decade ago. Perfect application of DSP, ample watts, and excellent cab design which made for great sound.

Either the designer is a genius, or the marketing department are liars.

Sounds like the proverbial free lunch to me. (Or, an insult to ones intelligence).

Thanks guys for the feedback. I went with it because my guitarist had read on a forum somewhere that the guys were saying the 12" was adequate for bass on stage along with PAs. And yeah, I understand the different of these monitors when talking guitar vs bass. I think I'm going to go with the 12" and just see what happens. My guitarist's son works at Sweetwater so I get pretty sweet discounts. I may just run up to Fort Wayne and try it before I buy it. Just a note: I'm running a Darkglass to an Ampeg SGT-DI straight to it. It sounded great, but I didn't notice that I don't think I can bring it up more than 50%. Let's put it this way -- my BA-210 wasn't the greatest in terms of me hearing it well. But it seems that FRFR is louder at 2000 watts with a 12". My BA-210 is not 2000 watts, so that's why I tried it. I'll be looking at the suggestions for the other combos. But I need something lighter in weight. Thanks so much for the feedback -- can always rely on you guys. Any other thoughts based on what I typed above?

Your BA-210 isn't 2000 watts, that's for sure because the specs are clear as to how the amp is rated. I suggest that you learn how the 2000 watts that's claimed is actually specified and I think you will find that in reality they are much closer than you assume.

I have grown to trust what the 'resident' Mesa engineer says. I wish you would have considered his advice regarding your OP.
However, the price of this lesson won't be too steep and you'll have learnt that you have a great resource for vetting your next purchase in amplification.

I ran the sgt into the head rush 8” for testing and it didn’t have the speaker headroom to have any chance at a performance. I don’t know about the amp because the speaker gave out first at 25% of the volume travel. 12” is I think the same amp but still a guitar speaker cab. Please lus know how it goes.

Powered bass cabs would be nice. Tech21 used to have such a thing since they assumed everyone had their tone on their pedalboard (I do a lot of the time also). Must have either not worked well or just not a good market for it.

my guess is a headrush-like device with enough oomph for bass would be significantly larger and heavier and thus not much advantage over other choices.
Barefaced used to make a powered wedge version of their big baby. They stopped when the makers of their power amp of choice discontinued said amp. I currently use a Yamaha DXR15, and it has ooomph comparible to a real 115 bass combo with 300w of power. Amplifies the low b very nicely, even better then the much loved QSC K12.2. , and only weighs 22kg

I just bought the HR 8" 2000 watt monitor. I was using an Ampeg BA-210 combo but was getting tired of carrying that heavy thing around and everywhere we play we have a PA. Our guitarist has a HR 12" and loves it. I thought I was getting a 12" but made a mistake. Thinking about sending it back. I haven't rehearsed with it yet... just got it today.

We play metal... anyone using it at gigs for monitoring? Should I send it back? It's loud in my office, but it's not a stage. We also don't use in-ears. We have them, but always have a hard time dialing them in (we can't afford a rack mount to dial in our ears before a gig)

Thoughts? Think it'll be loud enough?
Get a Yamaha DXR15 if you want the powered speaker thing. Bass has an element of physical impact and limitations to it that very very few off the shelf powered speakers can handle. I tested them all and only the Yamaha could amplify a low b like a real bass amp. Keep n mind I'm comparing to a bass 115 combo of 300w power when I say this, no powered speaker will compare to a fridge. The physical aspect of bass tone and all that.

And if you're on a tighter budget the Yamaha DBR15's are great bang for the buck. Not quite as refined as the DBX, but still very good.

Aside from using them as my FOH speakers I've used them as a monitor/amp for digital drums in small rooms and even did some testing with our guitarist using his Mesa Mark Five head (I think that was the model). It was just too touchy with volume with the matched cabinet. He'd be too quiet but a tiny movement on the volume and he'd be too loud. Ran it through the DBR15.... and with the ability to turn the amp up further and turn the speaker down he had better adjustment and it sounded almost as good as with the Mesa cab. Even the guitarist was surprised how good it sounded.
