I don't know if this is already known, but i haven't seen this tip on tb that i can remember.
okay, i always read that the scarf head should between 10 and 15 degrees. i am going with a 12 degree. i set the mitre saw for 12 degrees and cut a scrap piece. it was the opposite of the angle i needed. i looked at the protractors, and o and 180 both fall on the flat line. the head angle is backwards from 180 BUT the shop tools go up from zero. so on machine saw measures, the scarf cut will actually appear as 162 degrees, but the max the machine saws went is 60 degrees.
here is what i did (assume all these are angles up from zero). i cut a 12 degree on the mitre saw, then went to the table saw, and used its angling protractor, set that to zero, so that if i sent a flat piece, it would cross-cut instead of rip the lumber. i clamped the 12 degree agled scarap piece to it. this cancels the opposite angle (162 degrees, the angle of the head) and makes it parrallel and in line with the table saw blade. i then made a complete set out of some scrap maple of 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 degrees on the miter saw, now all i need to do is decide whitch one to use, set the table saw protractor to flat, and clamp it.
