Hearing Loss and Ear Plugs

If you don't have $150, the best thing to do is sell something to get the $150. Seriously.

The second best thing is to spring for the one-size-fits-all Etymotic ER-20. I found that I could get about half a year's worth of regular use out of mine before having to get new ones. I bought a pack of five and they were quite reasonable that way.

There are others out there but you start to get to the point where it doesn't really work to play with them in. They do tend to suck tone and articulation out of what you hear if you go with the cheap stuff.

But don't go without.

If you live in a mjor city the next time their is a gun show around, even if your anti-gun. They make ear plugs that are fitted to your ears. They pore this multi colored gue into your ears(you can pick the colors) and it molds perfectly to you ear and deadends any sound that comes into you ear. IMO I think they are the best plugs ever. I played with them against 2 5150's and mic 6 peaice drum kick and 2 vocalsit in a metalcore band plus me standing almost ontop of the PA and my bass amp, oh yeah the 5150's were running through power amps. don ask me why.

I bought 2 sets of the ER20's from Mike Dimin's website a while back. I keep one set on my keychain and another set in my room so that once these wear out, i can just open up that set.

I've worn them in most playing situations, and anywhere else i think it seems a bit loud. Most recent example-i went to the movies w/one of my friends [daughter of a guitarist i play with every other sunday.....humor me-she's my age]. The movie started and i thought "WoW, this seems really really loud"-like louder than my amp at big band performance volumes, so i took em outta my pocket and put them in. Made the movie a lot more enjoyable.

The sound is great-everything is just a lot quieter [the goal].

Eventually-i want to get custom fit ones, but for now-i'll stick w/the ER20s.

That's all

Any music teachers out there using custom plugs? I play bass, t-bone, and teach middle school concert and jazz bands, and am finding that the MS jazz band is a bit much for my ears after rehearsal. My biggest problem with my non-custom ER-20s is occlusion - the weird sound that you encounter when you talk or play a wind instrument. This, understandably, makes one feel a bit less effective in one's teaching.

So, I went to get fit for Westone ER-15s today, and am hoping for the best. I'm really hoping that the occlusion doesn't come with the plugs - they are supposedly pretty good this way.

Peace.

I went down a couple of years ago and ordered the custom plugs. Unfortunately, the stupid audiologist lost them after I ordered them. Pay on delivery, so it's all good.

I picked up a set of the Hearos Hi-Fi plugs, and I like them a lot (from what I can see, they're clones of the ER20s). The only thing that I don't like is how deeply I feel like I have to jam them into my ears.

Anybody ever lose their custom plugs? Also, do you outgrow your plugs? How long can you use them before they wear out?

Eh, don't hold your breath. Mine had a tad of occlusion when I talked or anything of the sort.
