Heavier Fuzz than Green Russian

I like the occasional fuzz bass tone, and like the Green Russian flavor of it (with the tone knob at zero), but I’m on the lookout for something that is just… more. Heavier, fuzzier-but-super-dark. My first thought was the Keeley Moon Fuzz, but there only a couple of bass demos out there. They sound good, but without a direct comparison, it’s hard to determine if it will work for me.

Any other suggestions on Russian-esque fuzz that will give me a bit wilder dark tone? I’ve tried boosting the EHX, but it doesn’t quite get me there.

Instead of boosting the EHX, have you tried putting the Russian in front of a (lower) gain drive? I find that usually yields better results than trying to get more gain out of a pedal that is already running at max gain.

I tried a few different configurations, but nothing was an improvement of the basic muff tone.

Might be worth trying to track down one of the Green Russian based Mask Audio Electronics Black Math.

Or one of the other variants he makes. It's basically a boosted muff on steroids.

Civil Math is also good (based on Civil War muff) but less gain and more overdrive, so probably not what you are looking for, by the sound of it.

Mountainking Megalith might be worth a try too, it gets crazy, but a little different texture than your typical green russian.

Wren & Cuff Super Russian also might fit the bill.

I'd consider checking out some demos of the Fuzzrocious Heliotropic. I'm not a big fuzz guy myself so never used one, but I've heard a lot of demos of it and it sounds huge.

Do yourself a favor and get a fuzzrocious Heliotropic It does the heavy low end and big fuzz! Ryan and co at fuzzrocious are amazing definitely my favorite builders

also might be worth checking out the earthbound audio supercollider. Had one for a bit that I loved until I came across an ARC Big Green that just suited me a bit better.

x3 on the Heliotropic, it’s the most massive fuzz I’ve ever tried and has been on my board for 7 years

I would look at the Wren & Cuff Super Russian. The combination of the pre-fuzz boost and the "creamy dreamer" mod gives you options to get into some really big, saturated territory without losing the classic green/russian muff vibe. To my ears, the pre-fuzz germanium boost on this pedal feels way more 'integrated' into the fuzz than just hitting a muff pedal with a standard clean/dirty boost.

Swollen Pickles are known for massive low end, and they're Muff-based as well.

I'll echo the Heliotropic recommendations too. Different character of fuzz but the tone control will definitely get you into dark, rolled-off highs territory.

Can't believe I didn't think of that one when replying!

It's more complex than a regular Green Russian muff. Some Compression and a bit of the same effect as running both a Rat and Muff, or doing some multi-pedal gain stacking unless my ears deceive me.

Plus @rratajski is an amazing builder, and super helpful if you have any questions about his wares!

I'm a fan of the Fuzzlord Drone Master, but also Source Audio stuff, because you can tailor the fuzz to exactly what you are looking to hear. You just tweak it in the editor until it is right rather than buying a series of pedals to figure out if you like them or not.
