Absolutely yes. One of the doomy-ist Meshuggah songs IMO. Although I prefer the original recording to the re-release. They slowed it down 10 bpm or so.

It's not as heavy as most of this stuff, but Led Zeppelin's version of When the Levee Breaks is pretty heavy for a blues tune, gotta love that thunderous Bonham drum beat:

Dimmu Borgir has always been know for writing some pretty haunting melodies, not really that "heavy though". Gateways actually impressed me I figured since they lost Vortex and Mustis they were going to go down hill. The new vocalist brings something more haunting to the mix.

That's a pretty broad assesment, there are so many different subgenres to metal. Everything from Thrash (Metallica) to Hardcore (Emmure) to straight up technical death metal (Necrophagist) as you can tell, all three of those bands are extremely different from eachother but all fall under the metal category. Not everything with "screaming" in it is death metal.

I personally don't care for the screaming, the only thing I pay attention to is the instruments. Metal offers a different side to bass playing which is usually a more technical, Fluid style of playing and IMO a more impressive side. Bass has ruined me for life, when I lsten to a song now all I care about is what the bassist and drummer are doing. If I don't like what they are playing then I don't like the song, I could care less at that point what the lyrics or guitar riffs are.

Man there are some good tunes listed here! A lot of variety too...ranging from lyrically heavy to vocally heavy to wall-of-fuzz heavy...very cool!

I'd say my choices would have to come from Mastodon, Crowbar, or High On Fire. I couldn't pick just one but there's a lot of doom and post-metal bands putting out some really heavy stuff too.

Interesting thing you brought up there. Myself, when I'm thinking heavy, I'm thinking musically, tone-wise heavy. As in, cranked amps and fuzz, lots of bass. Not necessarily low-tunings, but they do help to create this thick, dense wall of distortion.

I never thought about the lyrics/vocals as heavy, since I never really pay much attention to lyrics in the first place. I appreciate good and well written lyrics, but they play no role in me liking a song or not.

Cash's version of Hurt - good example of what I said earlier - an acoustic tune can be heavy as fack
