Heel Split/Crack - Repairable?

It is frustrating when someone attempts to repair a crack like this and the repair goes south. Inexperienced? Starved joint? Who knows.

It makes a relatively straight forward repair into a project.

Epoxy is definitely the adhesive of choice for this one. The hard part will be to clean out as much of the residual glue from the botched attempt. After that the epoxy should hold. As for the holes, either cross grain plugs or metal inserts are good. Depends on how much the OP wants to pay. Inserts are deluxe and the price should be, too.

I'm sorry for your troubles. This is a costly lesson that although you can repair a hole with picks and glue, if you are doing it it hardwood, you need to drill a properly sized pilot hole. Maple is just too dense to yield to the screw and will split. Body wood is often much softer and will yield to the pressure of the screw forcing it's way into the repair of say, a strap button. If you are using more than one hand on the screwdriver to get a screw in any situation, STOP!! Drill a pilot. Always pilot hardwoods, new holes or repairs; if you use very thin slivers of wood and insert the screw while the glue is wet, you may get away with it, but it's not advisable.

My sympathies to you Twangcheif, but this looks fixable, but get it done quickly.
