just last night a drummer i was playing with annouced "ADAM CLAYTON is AWESOME!" and went on and on for almost 5 minutes, getting more and more animated. i smiled and nodded and then logged on this morning and saw this thread. weird.

obviously he's not great in the sense of breaking new ground, but i think he's great at his job. and it looks like a pretty great job.

I doubt if any of the supermodels that Adam Clayton dates will be talked out of doing so by reading negative comments about his bass playing on the Internet. Even if he didn't date supermodels, a number of the alluring women of Dublin are just as impressive or even more so. I'm no U2 fan, but I wish I were Adam Clayton, too. (Not directed at you, Bass SA, just a general comment.)

Anyone that bashes another musician needs to open their minds - a lot.

I'd rather gouge my eyes out than listen to country music but I appreciate that others do love it and that a level of talent is required to play it, master it and perform it live.

Sure, some have more talent than others. Some were lucky enough to join in a band with talented players that made it big. Some call it luck, some call it magic but whatever the reason they are successful and the rest of us are not.

Get over it. Stop wasting your time whining about other peoples talent (or apparent lack thereof) and improve your own. And while you're at it, open your mind a little too. you'd be amazed what you learn when you take off the 'I hate X' blinders.

Agreed.

To be honest, I stopped listening to U2 a long time ago, mainly because of the one-man idiot that Bono had become, but everything up to the 'Live Under A Blood Red Sky' record is great. Some lovely bass work on those first couple of records.

I remember digging his attempts at a bit of slap on Gloria...dunno if he's tried again since, but he's never needed to.

I also thought that main intro riff to that 'Kinky Boots' song recently sounded like a Clutch outtake.

Yep, AC does a job and does it very, very well. Nothing but kudos to him :)

People always dissing on Adam Clayton.

How many people could hear a Geddy Lee or John Entwistle bassline fitting a U2 song?

Give me a bassist who plays what the song needs and doesn't spend his time trying to impress others.

Imagine Jaco playing bass in U2- Besides the huge ego clash between him and Bono, and Edge taking him out back for a little percussive therapy about the face and head, it probably wouldn't work very well, don'tcha think?

A pick and a Pbass, big tone, and holding down the bottom end- If you don't have the skill to fill it with chops, fill it with tone and drive. You can burn up the fretboard and piss off everyone in the band for tens of dollars- Or, you can do what he does for eleventy million a tour.
Nobody told him he was getting paid by the note. I like HOW he does his job. I may not dig U2, but like a lot of others here, I respect the fact that he knows his role and takes it seriously.
