When in doubt the ole Root of the chord on the first beat and the fifth on the third beat works. Follow the chords and fall into a groove with the drummer, no drummer sing along under your breath with the lead vocalist. The beat is the reason we are in the band, let the solo instruments handle the tune (melody), we bassists take care of the rhythm and harmony. Ask Google about harmony,

If your root is on the A string, the 4th will be up a string same fret and the fifth will be down a string same fret. Why is that important? Well, the I-IV-V chord progression will be used in thousands of songs. Having the root note for the I-IV-V chords close to each other makes it a piece of cake.
I-IV-V in C = C, F, G.
I-IV-V in D = D,G, A
How do I know what chord is active? Good question. Find some fake chord sheet music on the song in question. How? Let Google find it for you. Ask Google for Chords, name of the song. At this point in your journey, I would not expect you to hear the chord changes right now, so ask for help from Google.
