I was just leaving the Alpujarra Academy of Music, where I have tenor sax lessons every week, when I passed a double bass leaning on it's stand, near the door.
I love the sound of this old fellow, and the way our bass player follows my melodic line just a few paces behind, and I just couldn't resist trying a few notes ....

OK - now I'm hopelessly hooked.
I've always been an impoverished artisan, regarding expensive instruments as the unattainable goodies of the wealthy, but having sold up in England and moved to Spain, I had a bit of spare cash.
I've had great success with my Chinese sax, electric bike, ukulele, and guitar - so I looked to China until the logistical side of getting it here proved unappealing.
Casting my electronic net a bit nearer home, I found a manufacturer in Germany offering a Hofner 3/4 for €1600, with delivery within a week from their outlet in Spain.
It should arrive in 3 days, on the 11th.

So I already know which way up it goes, and that you don't blow down it --
If there's any more to it than that, I'm hoping you folks will help me out...

If you are taking Hofner double bass - a month of lessons with an instructor is my recommendation.

The lessons will save you a bunch of time.

Sounds like good advice MalcomAmos, I'll have a word with my sax tutor, who also teaches bass.
Having noticed that the tuning is E A D G, and being used to the guitar, I'm hoping it will seem familiar.
I'm also hoping my big gnarly blacksmith's hands will be more suited to a bass than they are to a ukulele.
