help a noob chose a bass! ...plz!

Hey Mr. JMJ! First of all I must say I like your playing (no flattering, I really do!) very much!

I want to enter the sensational world of bass players but as every noob I don't know with which bass I can start... :crying:
I've asked a few guyz here and there but everybody says a different thing and I'm confused... I know you play with fender, but what do you think about the ibanez srx series? Also a bass player from my place proposed me the ibanez btb series... Have you played with any of these? I'm pretty convienced I'll buy an ibanez, but any brand is acceptable... I don't really have an opinion!!! :D

PS. My favourite so far is Ibanez SRX 590...
PS2. The style I intend to play is hard rock and metal...when I learn how to play of course... :bassist:

Dude, you should really choose a bass that 1) Feels good in your hands, 2) Has an inspiring sound to it, 3) Looks super cool to you.

Nothing is taboo! Don't let people force you into anything. I have no idea about Ibanez stuff, so I can't comment, sorry.

Well, the SRX 590 looks super cool to me and feels nice... I'm just questionning the sound coz you know I have no idea!!!

Thanks for replying, I'm totally honored... You know, I can now say that THE Justin Meldal-Johnsen helped me pick a bass!!! :D

By the way, can you help me pick an amp as well? :help:

My personal feeling is that nobody makes a bad bass anymore. Back when I started, beginner basses were crap. Now they're all playable and sound pretty good. I have a couple SX basses that cost $110 that sound just like Fenders to me, a little rough around the edges, but way better than anything else available in the 70's and 80's at that price point. I use them onstage now and then and they're great. So if you like that Ibanez, get it and get playing. Same for an amp. Just get something that's in your price range and sounds good to you. If you stick with it and develop some skill, your tastes will probably change anyway, or at the very least you'll want another bass and amp just for fun, so at this point just get something that makes you want to play.

I don't know if I agree with that, Mr. I greatly prefer 4's and only play 5's live with a gun to my head, but I know plenty of folks on here who have started with a 5 or 6 and did pretty well by them. And believe it or not, not all of them are wankers...just the majority ;)
