Help a TBer give up WoW

I had to just cold turkey it and it wasnt easy, seriously that game is worse than heroin
I started playing drums again, started a band and thats kept me busy, just moved my addiction to that instead of WoW. I do kinda miss my guild and gankin alli's though :-(

You non players should se how people get on tuesdays, thats when they take the servers offline for upgrades and maintenance, people freak out, especially if it's delayed longer than it supposed to be

Different audience I suspect. Not too over analyse this phenonemon too much, but games like WoW are pretty much aimed at the "nerd" set who have been known in the past to get too carried away with such things. Its basically Dungeons and Dragons for the modern world and its marketed at exactly the equivalent audience. The kind of people who generally (and its not to say that there arn't exceptions) play these games are the slightly socially awkward types who would probably be spending a lot of time online anyway. This just gives them a "reason" to be online by creating alternate identities, personalities and of course, social status, that they don't have in the "real world". My $0.02.

I will have to second that armchair analysis. :D

Right on target!

I swear they have a group of psychics/psycologists on staff that tell them when to bring out the next thing at exactly the right time.

A friend (and fellow WoW addict) had a theory on why WoW is so addicting:

"There's always 'one more'. One more piece of gear, one more boss, one more quest, one more mount. And just when you think that you've done everything, blizz brings out one more patch"

DING DING DING DING DING!!!!!! It's called marketing, and it's a genuine science that tells the company how to make the product more appealing to the consumer. If they can figure out a way to make you enjoy stewing in your own goo instead of you deciding to get up to go to the bathroom (and leave the game) then they will step on their grandmother's face to get this accomplished rather than let any opportunity to make a few bucks get away. :eyebrow:

Then why don't we hear about this with other games like Solitaire or Tetris? :D

I know what you mean Mark. It's scary how these role playing games are sucking people in. I seem to remember stories like this going around back in the heyday of The Sims.

-Mike

I think people get sucked in because of how they grew up. I had nothing to do but go exploring in the woods when I was small. I was building forts and hunting and stuff while classmates were video gaming.

I think TV is worse.

There are millions of Americans who watch TV more than 8 hours a day, seven days a week, and quite a lot who spend nearly all their waking hours with their eyes glued to the idiot box.

But it's a lot more accepted because television has been around for so long and it took us decades to adapt ourselves to the idea that it's okay to waste large chunks of our day doing nothing but killing time.

I played for about a year and a half, and then got bored of it. I never really made a lot of friends online, so that helped a lot.

It's not so much that game as the social interactions and the thrill of interacting with 'real' people, albeit in virtual form, that creates the addiction. The actual game itself isn't even that fun. It's very repetitive.

+100. My wife and I are looking at losing our cable, especially since different preschool channels started carrying their shows online for the kiddies...just plug the laptop into the TV, and it's easy to monitor what and how much we all watch.

And, fewer commercials.

I can't agree that TV is worse, though. I haven't heard of people getting divorces and losing jobs because of TV, whereas I know of a few divorces off the top of my head that are WoW related.

... At 2:00 am, when the DM is eyeing the pizza and some of the players are looking at the TV wistfully, it's hard to keep playing...
It's not just WoW, either, I watched a friend's marriage dissolve over a MUD...
Been there, done that. Showing your age, Walter! :)

...only have a tonne of love for a few (coughcoughfifthelementcoughcough) :D

I L O V E that movie. Once went a year that I didn't watch it atleast once every 10 days. :)

On a more serious note: http://www.olganon.org
--Good people. Helped me a LOT move past my compulsion. Now all I obsess over are sexy basses. :)

Same here. I was out playing cops and robbers with the neighbor kids, while other people were inside playing video games. The result: I seem to be pretty much immune to the video game addiction that's sweeping my generation. I always get bored of a game far before I get into it enough to get hooked.

An update of sorts, and some proof that its over.

First I did:

WoW toons deleted, account set for another email that will self delete (thank god for hotmail), password changed to something I don't know. All's that's left to do is destroy the discs and the account activation keys, just to be uber safe.....

I've now done the same thing to that hotmail account. Random (hand over eye, finger all over keyboard) answer to security question. My mother now lives somewhere I don't even know!

I also did the same with the e-mails password. No way in hell am I gonna get the account info back at all. The last thing to do is destroy the discs:

WoWbustedCDs001.gif

And I even just shredded the account codes AND the trial ones. You might notice in the photo that none of them are fully visible :D I don't even have a full photo of ANY of them.

I can't believe I went that far.....
