This is my brother's instrument that is definitely not FS Cherry on mahogany, set neck, six digit serial number so it is pre-'75, and a solid headstock...so from what I can gather it is late 60's. When, I wonder ? If it were in front of me I guess I'd check out the cutaways. ? serial number 942900 Red
This would be easier with a few pics. Does the neck have a volout? Silkscreen or MOP headstock inlay? Front pickup right against the neck or backed away twards th middle of the guitar?
Wish I had pics. I don't know what a volout is. I recall that the headstock is an inlay and the pickup placement touches the neck. It's the late 60's differences I can't find.
It sounds like a '68, according to the serial number. Here's the Blue Book guide from the Gibson site: http://www.gibson.com/Files/downloads/bluebook/GibsonSERIALNUMBERS.pdf. This site tells how and when the specs changed on various Gibson bass models. Might be helpful: http://www.provide.net/~cfh/gibson9.html A volute is a part that sticks out at the back of the neck, at the top, where neck joins headstock. It's there to add strength. Some of the later EB's had volutes.
This page may also help you EB3 timeline Dating factors include the type of bridge, as mentioned, position of handrest/bridgecover, and shape of heel - all these changed in the period '66-'69 but you can also get good info from the pot codes too. The trouble with the serial numbers is theat there are so many exceptions to the generally accepted serial number/date list. Also many numbers were re-used in more than one year. I always date late Gibson basses of this period by features, and then hopefully the serial number matches up.
I read the title of this thread and had a real sarcastic reply lined up....something like...You should by it flowers and take it to the movies. Oh, and always listen to it even if you have to pretend to be interested.
doesn't everyone take their bass to the movies ? I thought it would be fun to start a thread "so, how many basses have you had a relationship with that is longer than your significant other?" or maybe "gas v. spouse: which to pick?" or maybe a poll More RELEVANT information on the eb3 - no volute, MOP inlay and the bridge has individual ht adjustments... Thanks
You should try and take her on a date first before you rush anything. Flowers are always a good call too!
