Newcomer here, recently came back playing bass after a few years abandoned and looking to get a new one, but I am stuck with the options
I currently have a quite old passive Ibanez GSR200 (2003 model I think). It has served me well even for recording some of my songs, but I feel like getting something better (some of the electronics are also banged up a bit). Here are some candidates I am looking at and some of my thoughts. I'd please like some feedback, since there is simply no store with basses in my area to try them out, unless I literally take a plane, so it is going to be kind of a blind buy :-/
- Squire CV 70' or Sire P5. Would any of these two have an actual difference compared to changing the pickups of my GSR200 though (EMG GZR or Duncan for example)?
- Squire CV Jaguar. I like the medium scale fact if it enhances playability and for having something different, but not sure about the tone and the few string options. The PJ is probably a plus.
- Sire U5. Similar to the jaguar thoughts (playability, something different, PJ), but not sure if it's a weird transition from long to short scale. At least this can take long scale strings as far as I've read compared to the jaguar.
- I've also looked at Yamaha BB234 and Harley Benton Enhanced MP but they are probably not that a step up from my GSR200 (?).
As for the sound, I generally like a clean, boomy yet clear one. I don't really like effects except for maybe some delay/reverb for ambiance moments. I literally hate the tone knob at least on my GSR200 and always have it 0%, unless I rarely go for some slap, so I am thinking of putting flats on whatever I get (never tried though). I mostly play soft/post rock and funk style, and don't use a pick.
Any feedback or advice deciding is very welcome
