help finding a head

i really have no idea what kinda head to go for, i'm looking for something that has quite a punchy mid sound and would be able to handle quite sludgey distortion with a lot of lowend. preferably around 400watts. I generally play more rocky / sludgey metal stuff so want a versitile e.q to. Any ideas anyone?

fender 1200 pro / sunn 1200s (same amp)

way over what you want in power, but its got an awesome eq section, onboard dual band eq, blendable OD channel and the OD i get out of mine adds gobs of lowend and sludge....its awesome!!!

I'm sure others will have better solutions with closer to the wattage you want...but i love the sunn and i think itll your job perfectly

GK, Ampeg, Trace
try as many amps as you can in your price range using your bass and cab. when you find the right amp your ears will let you know.
have fun with it.

ahh aye i looked into getting a sunn concert head before but they're such bastards to get a hold of, hmm i have a 4ohm 400watt cab so i'm guessing that head would be around 800watts at 4ohms? so would out right blow it? any other suggestions or should i just go for a more powerful cab bearing in mind that anything more powerful might be complete overkill atm

I think SWR used to recommend a slightly overrated amp. When you overload the speakers you will hear it (and then you should turn the volume down, of course :-). But if the amp starts to overload at about the same time the speakers do, you will not be able to separate speaker distortion from that of the amp itself, and so the risk of blowing the speakers is greater. The alternative would be to have a very underrated amp, but that is not as fun...
