Help geezer with rig buying tips

JimmM, I have to tell you I also love Ampeg. In fact for years I gigged with just a basic BA-115, all 100 watts of it, and it was fine for about 90 percent of my gigs in small bars, etc. Finally after years it just stopped working. I have it now next to me as a 63-pound doorstop. I got the GK rig, as I said, at a steal of a price and I will sell it, also at a steal of a price. And you're right, I have to get rid of the cabs. And I do like the head. I'm just trying to find something that's reasonably cheap and reasonably heavy, like 60 pounds max.

GK Neo 112 cab, and GK MB500. Buy them from Musicians friend when they have the $50 off sale like today. They have sales almost every day it seems. Those cabs are tuned down to 40 hz or so. Very good sounding, and only 30 lbs because of the Neo magnets. Ill be honest I prefer the sound of my Aguilar Db112 but the GK neo cabs is so light I haul it around lately at small gigs and practices. In fact right now Ive got a lightweight rig in the backseat of my extended cab truck the GK Neo 12 cab weighs 30 lbs and the Aguilar TH350 weighs like 4 lbs.

I'd like to offer a somewhat different idea here...

have you considered a combo like a MarkBass CMD121P? Perhaps with the NY121 extension cab? (you might have to wait on the extension - it's like 499 by itself)

I have had a CMD 121P since the month they came out and, while I don't use it for most shows, (we tend to be a little loud), I absolutely love the little guy for practice and smaller shows when I go through the PA.

It really is a nice combo and weighs in about about 39 pounds....

A good 2x12 is usually all I need, and there are plenty to choose from. I like the Aggie DB212, & GB Uber 212 best, but you may like something else. I only say 212 because a good one can get as loud as an old timey 2x15, at a fraction of the size/weight.

I'm with you on the weight issue. I wont name equipment but give you ideas.

1) Get a med power (300W or more) 38 lb 1X15 combo for small bars.

2) Buy a decent head and either two 40-45lb 2X10s or two 40-45 lb 1X15 cabs.

You can mix and match this to fit all your gigs and never lift more than 45lbs. A callapsing handtruck is your friend.

Well I'll just point out that they do still make the BA115 ;)

Some of you forget that the man is on a budget.
I would look for anything you like with a neo speaker, and there have been lots of good choices mentioned here.
I would keep my head (if you like it) and pick up one neo 12 from the maker of your choice and add another 12 or even a 10 if you need it, when you need it.
From one old guy to another, you may notice I refrained from use of the word "Depends"!

We just got home from a gig with my son's band (he's 11--they open up for his teacher's group). We share an MB 210, and we love it. The kids in his band play really loud, and this club was pretty big. The MB210 filled the whole club with bass (no instruments in the PA) and didn't break a sweat. We also have a 115MBE, but for opening gigs like this, we don't often set it up. Both my kid and I are really happy with this amp. It weighs 33 lbs.

That bears repeating: it weighs 33 lbs.

+1, on the speaker at least. Ditch that stack... it's the part causing you the most grief in both weight and sound.

The budget you gave will easily get one of those, and you might be happy with just that change. (Loud, light, sounds good.)

You'd have money left over, and could decide then whether it should go toward a new head or a second Bassic 15. (Unless you need really loud, probably the head.). Or if you like the results enough, put the dough back in your pocket for some other use.
