I’ve used .120s in perfectly ordinary nuts without issue on multiple occasions. (I didn’t tune them up to E1, but that’s irrelevant.) If the nut slot can’t accommodate a .105, I would venture to guess that’s not the only thing wrong with it.

Yeah, the difference between .100 and .105 is literally five thousandths of an inch.
I am going to go buy one. I have one and have no clue where it is. I will find it after I buy another one.
It’s what you use to measure diameters. Sounds like this likely use this is a one off in your case. It’s best if you can borrow one from some one you know with a well stocked tool chest, like a machinist or auto mechanic.
If you need to buy one for measuring strings once or twice, try a store like harbor freight, or Northern Tools, or Amazon. You don’t need to buy the best one on the market as they can get pricey. Oh, and buy a small one. Best wishes.
BTW, It’s pretty cool having a son pick up the bass as an instrument of choice. My son started playing at age 13 and has made a career as a bassist in the Marine Corps, complete with a never ending stream of gigs, steady income (which is a lot more than what one would think) , free health insurance, housing, tuition reimbursement, GI bill, and a retirement plan.
Me? I starved for my art…LOL. Seriously, it’s a great gig if you want to be a true professional musician.

It's most likely a 100. Basses are usually strung with light Guage nickel round strings.
Go 105 - 50 he'll love.

Hahaha, you wont need to man. You really only gotta file it if it's a drastic size change. Like, putting a 135 B string in a 100 E slot. You're perfectly fine changing between a few thousandths.
You should have no issue at all fitting a .095” to .105” string. Just buy them and put them on
A good dial caliper is an incredibly useful tool, I use mine often in many different applications.
Good call. You get inside accurate and outside measurements with a caliper. You need need to measure both the preferred string gauge as well as the nut slot to resolve this issue. A micrometer would be a useless tool to measure the width of the nut slot. Good catch.
