From the wikipedia article: "According to medical researchers, it is both dangerous and ineffective.[2] Claims that the practice removes earwax have been disproved. The claim by one manufacturer that ear candles originated with the Hopi tribe has also been disproven.[3]"

Ear candling is bogus hokum that does nothing positive and has a very good chance of causing serious damage to your ear.

Never use this technique. Ever.

Hey Mike! :)

Best advice here - we're musicians, our ears are the most important part of our anatomy, and we need to take very good care of them.

I have a chronic ear wax issue, I've had impacted ear wax at least 3 times (i.e. complete loss of hearing in one ear), twice requiring medical attention, once I was able to address the situation with one of the kits I posted on page 1. To avoid trouble now, I use the ear wax removal kit once a month, like clockwork, and I've never had another problem.

Also, be careful what you use, rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide are caustic and can cause damage as well, make sure you use a solution that is intended to be INSIDE YOUR EAR.

Putting ANYTHING in your ears without first having an exam is asking for trouble. Putting a foreign substance in an ear with even a small tear in your eardrum could cause MAJOR problems. While your getting that exam get a baseline audiogram as well. That way you can check over time what damage you might be doing to your ears playing music.

Gard. Go to your local Japanese market (I'm sure Korean, or Chinese markets will have them too) and pick up one of these. They're between 1-3 dollars. Enjoy all the goop that comes out of your ear.

Well. I use it pretty much everyday. Sometimes my wife cleans my ears for me with one. Millions of asian people use them. Did you ever consider that doctors tell you that for job security?
