Help identifying a 10" speaker please...

Hi all,

I have an 8x10" bass box (unbranded) and when I bought it there were only 3 of the original 8 speakers left. (Also has 4 Eminence Alphas in it.) I have searched and googled for info as to what they are so that I can get the other 4 going. I hope someone may be able to help, as I believe that 32 Ohm speakers are not that common.

The speaker looks mass produced, with a printed sticker on the side of the magnet (magnet diameter about 5"/120mm). I assume this sticker contains the model number and maybe a serial number as well. The sticker reads;

(In large lettering)
PS-10FL-32

(In smaller lettering)
10840 32 Ohm
67-96200350 G1

Also, the back of the speaker cone has the following printed, which I assume is a month/year of manufacture and maybe a serial or model number...

451033-1

I have attached a really bad photo if it helps at all.

Any help identifying this would be greatly appreciated.

I purchased the box in 2003 and it was several years old then, so maybe it isn't a date code... Considering both the chassis and cone have 2 and 96 in their first few digits, I am thinking this may have been built in Feb of '96.

It certainly isn't a name brand box like Ampeg. The box has a 'home made' feel to it, maybe like a carpenter who wanted to branch into something new. For this reason I also think that the speakers would be one of the cheaper brands, or at least a cheaper model. They certainly may be Eminence.

<scratches head>I'd put my life on the fact that I bought the box in early 2003 and I have never replace a speaker. Interesting...</scratching> Maybe I'm losing my memory!

OK then, it's unanimous, looks like they are Eminence.

The Alphas in the box must have been purchased around the same time. They are heavily branded as Eminence, but maybe Eminence were going through a marketing/promo change at the time. The speakers in question look somewhat different, so I would doubt they are a generic labeled Alpha.

I can't find any evidence of a 32 Ohm speaker in the Eminence 10" range these days... Any ideas of a model number, or series?

Wow. Thanks JohnK, you've nailed that one! I dare say that's the one. Looks pretty much identical.

So, I've checked out a few searched TBs site for info on the 86-032-01 and found this thread. The photo on this post confirms this is the beast. (Well almost.) Even the label and the printing is the same.

So, would I be correct in assuming that the official item number 86-032-01 is an official Eminence part number, and the PS-10FL-32 is an OEM model made by Eminence for some other company? If so, then this may not be 100% the same as mine. The 86-032-01 has a spec number of 324, whereas mine is 840.

Final questions (for now anyway!) - Does anyone know if Eminence kept the spec numbers the same even for OEM components? In other words, if my PS-10FL-32 was just a rebadged 86-032-01, would the spec number still be 10324? Or did they generate new spec numbers for OEM components?

The Eminence stock number is unique to the OEM, but not necessarily the specs. Perhaps half the OEM drivers from Eminence are exactly the same as in-line models save for the label and stock number, maybe 40% have specs that are very close to, but not identical to, in-line, and perhaps 10% are unique.

Only if they have similar specs, which you don't know yet. It probably is close, but only Eminence can say for sure.

Eminence has always been helpful to me when trying to ID old speakers. Email them all those numbers and they'll send you back whatever info they've got. They only time they won't is if they're propretary or still in use by some manufacturer who'd like to keep the info to themselves. If they're not in production you can compare specs and find something pretty close that is.
