(first post hope this is the right section)
Hi everyone!
Im new here and new to bass guitar as well. as far as musical background im a producer/ mixing engineer/ singer song writer i also play a little bit of piano as well. I was hoping to learn and add live bass to some of my compositions.
I am a member of and frequent many music related forums so naturally when i decided that id like to take up the bass i was immediately refered to TB. im hoping to get that old school funk/ soul sound so before going shopping i did alot of research..some guys swear by there j bass some guys swear by there p bass. i read up on brands fender, ernie ball, squire, ibanez.... from what i read alot of people suggested that newbies just get a squire or ibanez for starters which ever one feels best.
i started shopping at the beginning of the week, i probably went to about 3 diffrent shops in town. Since im new to bass and i didnt have a bassist handy to go shopping with me i had a hard time knowing what i was looking for. I figured it be a good idea if i just walk into the shop act like i know what im doing and pick up the nicest most expensive axe's there. That way i would know what "sound" i was shooting for with the budget models. after playing a few i decided i liked the Fender P bass the most. I then started trying out squires........ibanez and the likes (mind you this is at a few different stores im just trying to shorten the story).the squires i played felt ok but nothing like the real Fenders the ibanez felt a little better. THEN I saw the yamaha's.........i picked up a rbx......played it for a sec and it instantly felt more comfortable then the squires or inbanez. Right next to the rbx i see this black yammie and on the tag it says "tested in battle, lovely P Bass sound" however it didnt say which exact model it was it just said yamaha since 1887 on it. After playing this bass for about ten minutes i feel in love with it and i just knew it felt most comfortable out of all the ones i played and i was very much in love with the sound it made.
The only problem is i dont know which exact model ive bought! ive looked at tons of threads on TB and ive concluded that its either a "BB" model or its a 70s yamaha p bass. but i have yet to find one that looks just like mines. could anyone be of any assistance in tracking this info down?
like i said im not a bassist (yet) but i am a producer and i have a ear for what sounds well and this bass sounds awesome IMO.
i have a friend who plays upright and he thought that it sounded beautiful aswell.
i paid 170 for the bass and a extra 35 for ernieball flatwounds and to have them string it up for me. so i ended up spending just a little over 200 for the whole thing. does that sound like a reasonable price?
From what i gather these yahamas are no collectors items just good sounding instruments can anyone validate this for me?
